Holiday Traffic Toll Sei Al 525 By United Press International A final tabulation today showed 1 52S* persons died in traffic acci- ■ dents over the Christmas holiday ' and the National Safety Council estimated some- 330 more persons ; might be killed during the New j Year's weekend. The Christmas death foil was
the highest for a three-day Yule weekend since the “Black Christmas” of 1955. Seventy - seven other persons were killed in fifes, six persons did in plane crashes and miscelaneous accidents claimed 68 lives for an over - all holiday death' total of 676. " » Howard Pyle, president of the council, said, “this carnage on our country's roads over the Christmas holiday serves once , again to point up the . need fpr more care bn the part of all mo-

The weekend traffic count will start at 6 p.m, Friday, D6c. 29, i and run until midnightMomiay,.
Jan. 1. Although the recently-completed death count exceeded the preholidav estimate of 500 deaths by the council, it fell far short of the 1955 highway slaughter. The United Press counted 621 persons killed in a similar 78 hour period. At that time the council .asked, “How much longer will a civilized | nation create or endure such mass i mayhem?” I .The following year United Press j tabulated 712’ deaths in a four- ... day period — highest Christmas
holiday toll history. The People’s Voice This column js for the use of our readers who wish to make suggestions for the I good or discuss questions of interest. No articles wilj be published without signature of the author. o —o Write of Missions Mr. and Mrs. Harry Speakman, - and family, formerly missionar- ; ies in the Congo, write the following concerning the present state of their former missions in that area, from their present address, 233 W. Madison Street, Rochester, Pa. . Dear Friends: The past months I have enjoyi ed the privilege of meeting with many of you and sharing with you concerning the life in the Congo and opening for you winI dows on the Congo. It hardly seems possible that the holiday season is once more upon us. We are again remembering together the coming of the Prince of Peace into this world. « “Peace I leave with you, my cpeace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I tinto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). i This is the testimony of our church in Central Congo—truly in the heart of Christians is a peace which the world cannot give nor can it take it The presence of the Christ is continually manifest in lives of believers. We have something very precious to share with you from Tunda in the Central Congo. As you know, soldiers have made their way all through our area. And as can be expected, they found our mission station. But the village people joined hands around [ the station; they literally formed a human wall and told them not to go in there to do harm. They told the soldiers they were willing to die if they must, but they didn’t want anything touched. The result was that even as in Old Testament times, .'“The angel of the Lord encampeth round i about those that fear him and de- ! livereth them" (Psalm 34:7). Schools are in session, the hospitals carrying on even with very little medicine, and the church is I growing under hardship and persecution. In October Bishop Newell Booth gnd Joe Davis made a visit to our mission stations in Central Congo. They found discouraging and depressing things but the encouraging and inspiring aspects more than outweighed therp. Our stations at Kindu and Hunda haven't been touched, but there were a lot' of looting and destruption of property at Minga and Wembo Nyama, and the residences at Lodja were pretty well cleared out. The new hospital at Wembo Nyama was in perfect order, with workmen still going on to complete some of the remaining construction. Our teachers have kept all of our schools in operation, and the number of students enrolled has passed all previous records. A new trade school with 57 boys has been started at Wembo Nyama. Our hospitals are in operation, and there are nearly 100 medical students in training at our three hospitals. The church also has been growing. One district superintendent said that the people were constantly asking for revival services, because they said, “We need them more than ever now We do not trust each other, but a revival can bring us peace in our hearts aqd peace in our land.” Your prayers, your letters and your support are greatly appreciated. We that you will have a blessed holiday season. and Prayers, The Speakmans, Estherjean, Harry, Alice Jean and Harry Jr. NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS OF ADDITIONAL APPROPRIATION Notice Is hereby given the taxpayers of the 1./ecatur School City, Decatur, Adams County.
