NEWS Commodores Rally In Final Quarter Tuesday Night For 64-54 Win < ** __
By Pete Reynolds The Decatur Commodores, coming to life in the final quarter, defeated the Lafayqtte Central Pirates, 64-54. at the Decatur gym Tuesday night. It was the second victory’ in a row for the Commodores and their third triumph in seven starts. The Decatur Jads trailed, 44-41, after three quarters of play, but limited the Pirates to 10 points while rolling up 23 for their final 10-point margin. «. Ed Kohne put the Commodores on top to stay with his sixth fielder of the game with 5:35 to play. John Kohne’s free throw and a pair of two-pointers by the same lad shot Decatur into a 5246 lead with four minutes remaining and the Commodores were safely home. Leon Youngpeter’s boys led only once in the first quarter, at 8-7, but the Pirates took over from that point and had a sixpoint bulge built up at the end of the period, 18-12. The Commodores caught Lafayette Central at 22-22 with 5:10 to go in the second stanza. The teams traded points the rest of the half, with the Commodores taking a scant 33-32 advantage to the drissing room. Tom Deuter put the Pirates back on top early in the third period and after the Commodores tied the count at 35-35, the Pirates again shot into the lead and held that three-point advantage entering the final bracket of play. The Commodores showed well balanced scoring last night. Ed Kohne topped the victors with 15 points, Steve Blythe and John Kohne each tallied 12 and Jerry Heimann 10. Roy Buskirk, of the Pirates, topped all scorers with 18 points, and Deuter counted 15. Both teams fared poorly at the foul line, the Commodores converting 10 of 20 chances, the Pirates eight of 18. Fifteen personals were assessed the Pirates, and 13 on the Commodores. Next action for the Commodores will be Dec. 28 and 29, when they play in the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers tourney. East Chicago Washington Is Ranked On Top By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — East Chicago Washington’s Senators, shooting for their second Indiana high school basketball championship in three years, took over top honors in the state-wide popularity poll today. The United Press International coaches’ board, convinced by the Senators’ 70-52 victory over previously unbeaten and top - ranking Muncie Central in last Friday’s “game of the week,” gave the upstaters 16 of 18 fmst-place votes and a total of 17H oints, just two short of a clean sweep. East Chicago, one of nine major unbeaten quintets going into this last week of regular-season warfare before the holiday layoff, thus replaced Muncie in the No. 1 spot. Johnny Barratto’s boys had not occupied that lofty position since the 1958-59 season. The Bearcats, leaders the first two weeks in the UPI ratings, slipped to third spot behind Kokomo, which climbed from fourth place to second with 142 points,, including the other two first-place ballots. -» . Attucks Fifth Muncie got 110 points. Unbeaten Madison climbed from fifth to fourth and Indianapolis Attucks, surprise winner at Lafayette last weekend, from 10th to fifth to complete the upper bracket. The lower bracket, in order, was composed of South Bend Central which retained sixth position; Gary Froebel, Eyansvilel Bosse, Lafayette and Columbus. Froebel moved up from eighth to seventh, Bosse slipped from seventh to eighth althouth it was unbeaten through last week; Lafayette dropped from a tie for second with East Chicago to ninth, and Columbus regained a Big 10 spot in 10th place. The Bulldogs, 11th last week and eighth in the season’s first ratings, replaced Seymour in the select circle. Seymour, upended at Connersville last weekend, failed to poll a single vote in the board’s final roll call of 1961. The experts nominated just 22 teams, the smallest number this season. Besides Seymour, they dropped Richmond, Anderson. Gary Roosevelt, Indianapolis Washington. Auburn, Gary Tolleston and Pinnell. Washington 11 th Brand-new additions were Hammond, Goshen and Shawswick. Fish Experiments ■ * J ->'&■ '■ [ At Rainbow Lake
Adams county fishermen may soon be tying into 40-inch great northerns, weighing 12-14 pounds each, if the experiments underway in Rainbow Lake, near Geneva, prove out, Jack Hurst, area conservation officer, said today. , A year ago two good-sized great northerns were put into the lake, which like many ponds in the county, is overstocked with fiveinch and smaller blue gills. Then last spring more than 500 five-to-eight-inch fingerlings were placed in the lake. These fish grow tremendously in size, doubling in a year’s time. One of those placed in the lake last fall was caught this summer, and returned to the lake, but measurements of the fish showed that it was 24 inches long, three or four inches longer than when placed in the lake about eight months before. Like Weedy Lakes Great northerns will thrive in shallow, weedy lakes that have depths of 15 to 20 feet in them. Many farm ponds can even hold them, if there are enough small fish to support them. They live by eating smaller fish, like blue gills or minnows. Rainbow lake, about 65 acres in size, give or take five acres, is ideal for them. Rainbow Lake will have been stocked five years this spring, Hurst explained. This fall a number of two-pound bass were taken ¥arly in the morning, and even a couple of three and four-pounders were caught. Ice Fishing Good Lee fishing for blue gills is expected to be very good this winter, and fishermen are enDuquesne And Purdue Score Wins Tuesday By TIM MORIARTY i nited Press International Maybe the basketball experts were right when they predicted great seasons for Duquesne and Purdue. The unbeaten Dukes handed St. Bonaventure its first defeat 74-57, Tuesday night at Pittsburgh while Purdue, led by Terry Dischinger’s 30 points, scored its fourth victory in five games by walloping Nevada, 91-59. Seven years ago, Duquesne lost only three of 29 games behind such clever gunners as Dick Ricketts and Si Green. It was perhaps the greatest team in the school’s history. However, this newest edition of the Iron Dukes looks equally as good. Sparked by Clyde Arnold’s 18 points, Duquesne handed the Bonnies their first setback in six games by grabbing a 39-31 halftime lead and then running their rivals into the floor in the second half. It was the sixth straight victory for the 12th-ranked Dukes and came on me heels of their triumph oyer Pittsburgh in the Steel Bowl tournament last weekend. Mike Rice added 17 points and sophomore Willie Somerset totaled 15 for Duquesne while Miles Aiken tossed in 20 for the Bonnies. Dischinger netted 12 field goals and six free throws against Nevada before he retired with almost seven minutes remaining. The ninth-ranked Boilermakers used their complete squad of 18 players in an effort to keep the score down after breezing to a 44-28

couraged to keep the small ones as well as the big opes, as the lake is pretty well overstocked right now. Hurst has been keeping close check on the fish in Rainbow Lake, as well as in other lakes and ponds in the area. He has even been collecting fish scales, cleaning them with soda to take the slime off. mounting them wet between two glass slides, and projecting them with a 500-watt projector onto a screen so that the markings can be read to determine the age of the fish. Measure Fish Age For example, a fish grows much faster in the summer, when feeding heavily and moving around more, than in winter. The scales reflect this, just like the rings on a tree. In winter, growth is slower, rings are closer together. They look black. Hius, by counting the “black" or or winter rings, one can determine the approximate age of the fish. This, and the size of the fish, and location of catch, will help tell how the planted fish are growing and reproducing. No Size Limit While there is no limit on the size of great northern pike, Hurst recommends that those under two feet in length be returned to the lake. This will allow them to become established, and decrease the number of small fish. Actually, a two-foot great northern is pretty skinny and bony, and it is not until they get about 30 inches long that they are a “good” fish, with 40 inches being a really good catch. lead at intermission. Chico Feilback scored 18 points for—the visiting Wolf Pack. Detroit, sparked by Dave De Busschere, also proved to be a poor host in whipping touring San Francisco, 71-53. De Busschere tallied 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and held the Dons’ highscoring Jack Lee to seven points. - H. S. Basketball Huntington 57. Bluffton 54. Ossian 60. Hoagland 55. DePauw Beats Butler First Time In Years By United Press International The Christmas holidays may be a bit sweeter than usual this year for DePauw’s basketball team, all because the Tigers finally licked Butler. The Tigers turned the trick—the first time in 15 games—at Greencastle. Tuesday night, 85-69, for their second consecutive Indiana Collegiate Conference victory, and in the process spoiled the loop debut of the defending champs. Purdue, meanwhile, dosed a 5-game home stand by blasting Terry Dischinger’s 30 points for a 4-1 record and Indiana Central captured its Capitol City tourney for the second consecutive year. DePauw, scoring its fifth victory in eight games, never, gave Butler a chance. The Tigers built an early 11-3 lead to 46-22 shortly before the half and the Indianapolis quintet never recovered. Hot-shooting Dale Anderson with 33 points led DePauw, while Jeff Blue connected for 21 for Butler, which is 3-3 for the season. Purdue used 18 players in its one-sided match against Nevada’s Wolfpack. It was 44-28 at the half and coach Ray Eddy substituted liberally. Sophomore Mel Garland chipped in with 15 points and another upstart, Phil Dawkins, had
