Yellow Jackets Edge Central Catholic For Sixth Straight Win
By PETE REYNOLDS Six in a row! Those battling Yellow Jackets, refusing to bow down to superior size and weight, registered their sixth victory without a loss Friday night, edging the Irish from Fort Wayne Central Catholic, 71-69, in another thrill-a-minute at the Decatur gym. It was I C.C.’s first loss in six starts. The Jackets again refused to fold in the clutch. Trailing, 69-66, with just over a minute to play, the Jackets evened the score when Ike Eichenauer broke under wide open, dropping in a layup and added a free throw when fouled on the shot, and Decatur had again pulled even at 69-69. The Irish took the ball down the floor, fired at the bucket but missed and the Jackets grabbed the rebound, brought the ball into the offensive zone and called time, with 42 seconds to play. The Jackets kept possession of the ball and again called time, with 10 seconds to go. With the clock running out. Bob Walters fired one from the side. The ball hit the rim and bounded off but Denny Bollenbacher grabbed the rebound and jumped the ball through for the winner, as the final horn sounded before C.C. could put the ball in jday. ... Irish Lead Early The visitors got away hitting their first two shots and then rolled up a 10-point lead at 15-5 after four minutes of play before the Jackets began to click. But the Decatur lads scored the next eight points to trail by only 15-13. The Jackets finally worked into a 17-17 tie and then Steve Krull and Bob Walters traded chots for a 19-19 first quarter tie. Walters had six points in the period. Bollenbacher eight and Eichenauer five. ' The Yellow Jackets took the lead for the first time at 29-27 with 2:30 to go in the second quarter, and stayed in front the rest of the period, taking a 36-33 advantage to the dressing room. Krull and Tony Zych each hit two buckets in the first two minutes of the third quarter to give the Irish a 41-36 bulge. Decatur came back and had the score tied at 52-52 but Dave Schenkel hit from the foul line and Zych hit his fifth two-pointer of the period , for a 57-54 C.C. lead entering the final bracket. The final period was a battle all the way. Decatur held a 65-61 lead with four minutes to go but the Irish moved into their 69-66 advantage which the Jackets chopped away in the final hectic minute. Bollenbacher topped all the scorers with 25 points. Walters hit 18 and Eichenauer 17. Schenkel was tops for C.C. with 17, Zych had 14 and Krull and Maury Bubb 10 each. The Jackets won the game at the foul line, converting 17 of 31 chances, while C.C. made good on nine ot 23. The Irish were assessed 24 fouls, the Jackets 16. By 808 SHRALUKA The Monmouth Eagles scored ten straight points at the outset of the third quarter, to break a 26-all halftime knot, and copped a 71-55 verdict from the Decatur Catholic Commodores at the Eagle gym Friday night. ■ O I The Eagle hot streak opening the third stanza broke up what had been a close battle most of the first half, and carried them to their fifth victory of the season, with two losses, while the loss sets the Commodore slate at only one win and four setbacks. 10 In now Clarence Scheumann hit from the field with only seven seconds gone from the scoreboard clock, Dennis Braun potted a charity toss and seconds later a fielder, and Don Gehres tipped in a rebound. Don Brown hit from the corner and Braun connected on another gift shot, before the Decatur lads could score, and gave the Eagles a 36-26 margin midway in the third period. Jerry Villagomes broke the Commodore scoring ice at the 4:30 mark when he canned a free throw. A two-pointer by Jerry Heimann off the pivot and another free throw by Villagomes cut the Eagle margin to 42-36. Don Brown,-who rebounded sensationally throughout the game, especially off the defensive board, connected on his favorite jump shot and tipped in a stray shot, boosting the Eagle margin to ten points again, 46-36, going into the final round. Up Margin Jerry Heimann and Ken Kolter traded fielders to open the fourth stanza, as did Brown and Steve Blythe, but Scheumann popped in a jumper, Kolter tipped in a rebound, and then hooked for two more, shoving the Eagles into a 62-46 margin from which Decatur could never recover. The Eagles had shot to an early 15-8 margin in the first period, but the Commodores sliced the margin to 15-12 at the end of the initial eight minutes. Two quick buckets by John Kohne, and Ed Kohne’s favorite one-hander gave the Commodores their first lead of the game, 18-16, at the 6:40 mark of the second quarter. Tied At Half The lead see-sawed in the remaining minutes of the quarter, and Tom Kohne’s free throw with 1:02 left in the half, knotted the teams at 26-apiece at the main
