Yellow Jackets Rack Up Fifth Victory Without A Defeat Tuesday Night
By PETE REYNOLDS Decatur’s amazing Yellow Jacket’s racked up triumph number five without a setback Tuesday night, as they whipped the highscoring Ossian Bears, 88-72, at the Decatur gym. The loss was the third in five starts for the Wells county Bears. Ike Eichenauer hit the first of his five field goals after 10 seconds of play for an early Decatur lead. The teams were tied at 2-2 and 4-4 after 1:40 had been played when Roger Manns, who displayed a fantastic shooting touch, hit his second field goal to put Ossian ahead for the only time in the game, 6-4. A three-point play by Eichenauer ' restored the Jackets to the lead after two minutes of playing time, had elapsed, and Decatur was never headed again. Whopping 43 Points Manns, a 6-1 senior, staged one of the greatest shooting exhibitions presented at the Decatur gym in many a moon. The Ossian hot-shot easily led all the scorers with 43 points on 17 field goals and nine out of nine free throws. He tallied 10 markers in the first quarter, victory number six, as they battle
Muncie Rated As Leader Os Prep Quintets By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) — Muncie Central, easy winner in its first four starts, today bowed in as Indiana’s No. 1 high school basketball club. East Chicago, which has rugged contests against Valparaiso and South Bend Central this weekend, received three first - place votes and Madison got the other. The second five, in order, was composed of South Bend Central, Indianapolis Attucks, Columbus, Evansville Bosse, and Gary Froebel. Exactly 50 per cent of this week’s “Big 10” was left from the final roll call last Feburary. They included Kokoino, which led 10 of 11 ratings last season; Attucks, which was second going into the state tourney: Muncie, which was fourth: Madison, No. 5. and East Chicago Washington, No.. 8. Missing were Manual, Cathedral and Tech of Indianapolis, Michigan City, and Lawrenceburg. Manual, runnerup to Kokomo for the state title, has won only one of four games so far. Although Muncie was well out in front, the experts selected a whopping 31 teams in their season debut. The second 10 included do\ynstate powers New Albany,

10 in the second period, seven in the third and a big II in the final eight minutes. But Manns was practically the entire Ossian offense. Rex Kreigh, usual high scorer for the Bears, was throttled almost completely by Eichenauer. Kreigh hit four field goals and seven free throws, but missed nine foul attempts. The Jackets rolled up a big 28-16 bulge in the first quarter, led by Ike’s 11 points. Decatur was on top at the half, 50-35, and at the third period, 68-49. The Jackets probably yvould have topped the century mark but coach Bill McColly substituted freely. Denny Bollenbacher topped the Decatur scoring with 24 points. Eichenauer followed with 22 points and Bob Walters dropped in 15. Nine of the 10 players used by McColly broke into the scoring column. The Yellow Jackets were also tough at the foul line, converting 18 of 25 attempts, while Ossian made good on 20 of 33. Twenty-four fouls were called on Decatur, 14 on Ossian. The Yellow Jackets, face another rugged foe Friday in seeking

Peggy and her horse, known affectionately as “Squeakie,” compiled a record number of points, and also brought home many silver trophies from bridle path hack and pleasure horse classes. Another Championship Tamarack farm garnered still another state championship when Mary Ellen Chase, a student of Mrs. Stephens, won the threegaited championship with her own mare, ‘My Bonnie Highland.’ This was her first year to show, and both horse and rider were trained under the direction of Mrs. Stephens. The recent purchase of horses has caused James Stephens to look for a six-horse van. He handles the mechanical end of Tamarack farm, and has been known to fly back from Chicago and other points to drive the present four-horse van to a show. The addition of a new indoor ring at the farm has been proving invaluable in keeping both horses and riders “legged and fit” for the show season. Mrs. Stephens left December 1 for a ten-day holiday to work with Helen and Charles Crabtree at Crabtree Stables in Louisville, Ky. t and with Earl Teater at Dodge Stables, “Just to learn anything and everything I can.”
