Lanza was visiting his brother, Joseph Lanza, in the Westchester County jail when the concealed electronic recording device caught their conversations on various occasions between Feb. 5 to Feb. 9, 1957. Joseph Lanza had been imprisoned on Feb. 5, 1957 on a warrant chargihg him with violation of parole. Later that month his parole was restored. net total of 10 years. This was later reduced by a state court to a total of one year. In the appeal to the high court, Lanza’s attorney, Leo Pfeffer of New York, said “this case represents the first instance in which there has been presented to this court the question of the constitutional power of a state to use information acquired through an electronic eavesdropping device secreted in a room in a jail which the state irftoliedly represented could be safely used by prisoners to confer with their counsel, relatives or friends.” The appeal said that if the decision of the New York Court of Appeals is allowed to stand, other state prosecutors “will follow the lead of New York.” The appeal said use of the microphone “can only be described as unconscionable and reprehensible ... that has shocked the conscience of every forum—judicial, legislative and public opinion — that has had occasion to react ot it.” World Council Os ■ Churches Meeting NEW DELHI (UPD—Delegates to the third assembly of the Wortd Council of Churches (WCC I

prepared today to admit the Russian Orthodox Church to membership. Six hundred delegates from 60 countries voted Sunday to integrate the International Missionary Council into the world movement. The Missionary Council represents religious groups in 38 nations. Leaders of 175 Christian denominations or organizations opened the three - week assembly here Sunday. It is the first WCC assembly since 1954 and the first ever to be held in Asia. The 1954 meeting was held in Evanston, 11. The missionary council dropped its name after the vote and became the Division of World Mission and Evangelism within the WCC. A 115-member commission will supervise ist work. Dr. W. A. Viser’t Hooft, WCC secretary general, said the integration of the Russian Orthodox Church, with its 25 milion members “must be considered a major event in the history of the ecumenical movement.” - He welcomed the presence of five representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, which for the first time sent observers to a WCC assembly. The Roman church remains outside the World Council, however.
