Liquor Subject Os Broadcast Sunday '•Liquor and our free-world leadership” is the subject of a broadcast at 8:30 p.m. over radio station WANE (1450,kc5) Sunday, Mrs. Jesse Niblick announced today. The radio broadcast will explain how the state department uses tax money to purchase liquor for parties for foreign guests, and how use of liquor may have influenced important state department decisions. MISSIONARIES (Continued from Page One Troops In School The Portuguese government is believed to be quartering troops at the present time in the school built and maintained by the Methodist mission Rev. Anderson added. The Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1957 edition, gives the following information on Angela: A West African colony south of the equator bordering on the Congo, and having about 1,000 miles of coast land. It contains 481,226 square miles, about 11 times the size of h.aiana, with about the same population, 4,550,000 (1959 est.) as the Hoosier state. with some pure Negro and bushman stock in the south. Primitive Religion Fetishism is the prevailing religion in Angola, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Certain divisions of the Ba-Kongo tribes were Christian in the 16th and 17th centuries, and they today use crucifixes as fetish charms or as symbols of power, while every native has a ‘‘Santu’' or Christian name and is dubbed dom or dona. The colony forms a diocese of the Roman Catholic church, in the province of Lisbon, and maintains many schools, controlling all education until 1908. Baptists, Methodists, Cbngregattonalists, Plymouth Brethren, of theU.S. and a South African and Swiss mission are also established, according to the 1957 issue. A decree prohibits the teaching of native languages, and printing of books of religion or instruction in native languages, although this has been relaxed to allow a few bilingual books to be printed. Other Information The Portuguese government has hired a national advertising agency for $500,000 to present its side of the present conflict in Angola to the American people; Methodist sources indicate that some 30,000, as a very conservative estimate, natives, including many Protestant Christians, have been killed in the recent Portuguese drive to stamp out the independents movement in Angola, Rev. Underwood added. The Methodists help the most promising students in Angola to finance their education in Brazil and the United States. Figures for 1958 show that there were 1,428 primary schools in Angola, with 83,060 students, and 32 high;, scjioolg, with 4,705 students, and a total of 2,125 primary teachers and 280 high school ' teachers. There is one teachers training institute, with 266 stu-j dents, the Britannica Yearbook for 1961 concludes.
