Electric Healing Gives You Control Room-by-Room Individual room temperature control is one of the most important features of electric heating. Bedroom thermostats, for instance, can be set to suit each sleeper instead of at some median temperature that isn’t quite right for anyone. During the day, the children can play and nap in a warm room, while Mother cooks in a cool kitchen. Day or night, thermostats in rooms not being used can be turned down for the sake of economy. Best of all, say families who live in electrically heated homes, are the warm bathrooms. During Spring and Fall, when the weather’s warm enough to have no heat, but mornings are often chilly, the bathroom thermostat San be turned up to make bathig a pleasure instead of a test of endurance. No matter what room temperatures are preferred, thorough mineral wool insulation installed in houses with electric heat prevents drafts and helps maintain even, comfortable warmth. U.S. GOING TO DOGS Approximately one American family in three owns a dog, according to a recent survey. The current dog population is estimated 24,130,000.
New Electric Range Units Easier to Install
Today’s electric range components — wall ovens, counter-top cooking elements, and free-stand-ing ranges — can be installed with less effort and at lower cost now than ever before. This, says the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, is because electric ranges are being improved constantly for the men who install them as well as for the women who use them. Among these improvements are surface cooking elements that fit neatly into a counter top with a minimum of carpentry, single and double wall ovens that slide into wall or stock cabinets, and complete units — Surface elements and oven combined that drop in between cabinets. These improvements, plus many others, help cut installation costs and provide both builder arid remodeler with greater freedom of kitchen design.
Families Say They Prefer Electric Heat High on a hillside overlooking the distant dome of the capital: in Harrisburg, Pa., sits a house that knows every season outdoors, but only one indoors. A wall of windows spanning’ the living room of the Drexel! Hills home of Dr. and Mrs. Wil-' liam S. Davis makes the chang- ■ ing colors of the landscape part; of the room’s decor, but electric I heat and air conditioning keep the house comfortable inside, no matter what the season. Floors Always Warm The two small Davis boys are allowed to play on the floor all winter without fear of catching cold from drafts or cold floors. Electric heat and thorough mineral wool insulation keep the houjje comfortably draft-free and the floors warm to the touch. “When I -was a child, Mother was always saying, ‘Get right up off that floor or you’ll catch cold,’ ” Mrs. Davis recalls. “I’m glad I don’t have to say that to my children.” With individual thermostats for each room, Mrs. Davis keeps the bedrooms and kitchen comfortably cool, while the living room and the play room remain warm. Pale green draperies that frame the living roonl windows , point up another reason Mrs. Davis likes electric heat. Al- ’ though they have been up since ' the family moved in three years ' ago, the draperies look as fresh ■ as a new blade of grass. Clean and Cool Tn another electrically heated house two doors 'away, Mrs. William Raves, wife of a Harrisburg engineer and mother of two teen-age boys, adds credence to the cleanliness concept of electric heating. Her draperies, too, have been up for three years, yet they’re still snowy white. “I’ve lived with three other kinds of heating systems,” says Mrs. Raves, “so I know the difference. Electric heat is cleaner and more comfortable—quieter, too." With a white roof to bounce off the sun's rays and complete mineral wool insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors, their house stays comfortably cool all summer, Mrs. Raves says. “I wish we had air conditioning to keep it as clean in summer as it is in win* ter. though,” ahe adds. Economy Depends On Good Insulation Families who convert to electric heat protect their investment and help insure top comfort and operating efficiency by making sure their homes arc properly insulated. Today, it’s possible to install mineral wool insulation in homes of virtually any design, age or type of construction with little trouble or fuss. The key to this is a system of forcing a protective barrier of mineral wool into ceiling areas and exterior walls under air pressure. U.S. Going To Dogs Approximately one American family in three owns a dog, according to a recent survey. The current dog population is estimated at 24.130,000.

Expert Says Color Helps In Shelters In fall-out shelters, color should be put to use not as mere decoration, but as a definite aid to physical comfort and mental wellbeing, according to Faber Birren, color consultant to Masonite CorKnown for his books and articles on the visual, emotional and physical effects of color, Birren has written color specifications for many schools, general and mental hospitals. Under federal contract, he has designed interior schemes for the surface vessels and submarines of the U.S. Navy. Woodgrained hardboards 1 n colors he designed for Masonite Corporation have the qualities needed in a fall-out shelter. "All human beings are responsive to their environment,” Birren says. "In fall-out shelters there will be psychic factors to attend to, tension and prolonged confinement, all of which offer a chance to put color to practical use. "First of all, variety would be essential. Such variety should include a change of pace m color and interesting textures such as woodgrains. It would be wrong, for example, to have too much white. Under artificial light white’ would tend to create glare, constri ct the pupil opening of the eye, fog vision and cause general distress.” Other colors to avoid are yellowgreen, purple, blue, lilac, and gray. He said ideal tones would be soft yellow, refined pink, beige, and “particularly blue-greens and aquas which are the direct complement of human complexion and give it a flattering appearance.” "Bright colors may be used for accent, but in small touches only. If the rn"t"tnmcm has a wellbalanced variety, it will relieve monotony and constantly revitalize human spirits by presenting a different impression as the occupants look about the shelter. Bear in mind one scientific fact — that color has strong visual and emotional impact. It tends to direct human interest out and away from inner tensions.” Heating Electrically Cleanest Way Known An electrically heated home gives a family a head-start on cleanliness. Since no fuel is burned in an electric heating system, it can’t produce any smoke, soot or ashes to coat a house with grime. This cuts down on dusting and heavy cleaning for the housewife. and lowers cleaning bills for draperies, curtains, carpets, upholstery and clothes. In addition, the mineral wool insulation needed to increase comfort and help keep heating costs low also is designed for economical air conditioning, another step forward in year around cleanliness and comfort.
. I This compact new eleetrte range meets the needs of remodeler or home bailder alike. It can be built into a wall, hung on a wall, or placed atop a cabinet. Oven is at eye level, and surface cooking elements slide out of sight when not in use.
Marketing Authority Says: \ Housewife Can Save Money By Storing Food Properly tßy- Jr i ' I^—l I aMg |B1"~] J , J 4B t Top quality foods retain freshness in this modern electric re-frigerator-freezer. With generous storage space, housewife can give her budget a boost by buying in quantity when prices are right. This unit has generous freezing compartment at top.
"Every housewife has the responsibility of getting a full return for the money she spends on marketing,” says Mrs. Frances Foley Gannon, Director of the Bureau of Consumers’ Service & Research of the City of New York. "In many families this Is a serious responsibility because food accounts for almost a third of the average family income." Mrs. Gannon, who for 27 years has been giving millions of New York homemakers marketing advice on a daily radio program, stresses the importance of recognizing the quality of foods, then of preserving that quality once the food has been purchased. "Otherwise you are wasting your food dollar,” she warns. "You’ll save money by learning to store eggs, meats, dairy products, and frozen foods properly in an efficient electric refrigeratorfreezer to preserve the quality

The warmth and charm of Colonial architecture and the comfort and convenience of complete electric living, including electric heat, are combined strikingly in Meadowbrook Terrace, a community in Norfolk, Va. The houses, designed m the Style of nearby historic Williamsburg, all bear the Gold Medallion of total electric living. Although the architecture is rooted in the past, emphasis Otherwise is on modth*ir living; e : The Gold Medallions, awarded by the Virginia Electric and Power Co., show that each house is electrically heated, equipped With at least four major electric appliances, and wired for “full housepower.” The homes also are air conditioned electrically. Electric heating was chosenbecause of its draft-free comfort, cleanliness, and convenience. Individual room thermostats give complete selective temperature control to meet individual needs and a variety of activities. If a room is not being used, the

you have paid for,” Mrs. Gannon advises all homemakers. It’s not always necessary to buy top quality, she says. “You often can save by buying lower quality meats ana eggs, as there are many cooking uses for them. Remember that meats and eggs of all qualities have the same nutritive value.” With proper cooking, less expensive meats and certain cuts less in demand can become gourmet dishes. Mrs. Gannon notes that fine chefs use the less well known cuts such as chuck, beef shank, kidney, and tripe for some of their most popular dishes. Storing food correctly is equally important in stretching the food budget. If a housewife has one of today’s roomy electric re-frigerator-freezers, she can buy vegetables and meats in quantity when prices are down and keep them fresh for days in the refrigerator section or freeze and store them in the zero-zone freezer section for months.
thermostat can be turned down to save electricity. To make costs of heating and cooling ‘Meadowbrook Terrace homes as economical as possible, the architects specified mineral wool insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors, in accordance with the Quality Home Requirements of the National Mineral Wool Insulation Association. . These requirements —engineered specifically for electric heating and air conditioning—cal Wot batts ot blankets of min-’ oral wool labeled R-19 for ceilings, R-ll for walls, and R-13 for floors. This amount of insulation, properly installed, insures heating and cooling economy, as well as year-round, draft-free comfort. Roofing at Meadowbrook Terrace consists of asphalt shingles in deep tones to maintain the dignity and style of Colonial design. Double-hung windows, shutters and panel doors, all stock ponderosa pine units, are careful duplicates of those designed by Colonial craftsmen.
Million Heat Electrically In U.S. Today More than 1,116,000 homes will be heated completely by electricity by the end of 1961. Utility companies expect that by the pnd at this decade 5.2 million houses wiU be boated with etec*r These are figures released recently after a nationwide survey by Electrical World magazine, a business publication. In addition, surveys show, gome 400 houses daily—new and old—now are being equipped with complete electric heating reason to «■. startling change from conventional fuels to electricity as a means of maintaining colaweather comfort? Perhaps the most significant is the cleanliness electric heating provides. Since electricity heats without combustion, smoke and fumes are eliminated. This means less housekeeping, plus the economy of a cleaner house: fewer laundry bills and cleaning bills for clothing, furniture, draperies, and other household goods. ' * -J Some additional reasons for the increasb. in popularity of electric heating include: 1. Individual control of room temperaturds. Most electric heating systems have individual room thermostats. This means bedrooms, kitchens, and rooms that aren’t used can be kept cooler. Living rooms, bathrooms, playrooms, and sickrooms can be kept at the temperature preferred by family members who use them. 2. Single source of energy. Heating electrically means that the needs of the household are satisfied with one source of energy — electricity—for heating, cooking, lighting and appliances, as well as water heating. 3. Low-cost installation. Many electric heating systems are ideal for existing houses because they can be installed without expensive remodeling. For new homes, these same systems—baseboard units, ceiling coils, and wall panels—can be installed quickly and with a minimum of labor. 4. Scientific development of insulation to make electric heating as economical as fossil fuels. The National Mineral Wool Insulation Association has provided Quality Home Requirements that specify mineral wool installations to insure the greatest economy and comfort of electric heating. Many electric power suppliers refuse to grant aj special rate for electric heating unless the house is insulated with mineral wool according to these standards.

L-Shapod Ranch Easy To Expand Aq L-shaped ranch house is one of the easiest to expand, and it offers many opportunities to a growing family. If more bedroom space is needed, it might be a good Idea for the parents to give up their room and build a new master bedroom which could be dubbed the ‘‘parents’ escape.” It might have a TV or hi-fi set and several comfortable chairs in addition to the usual bedroom furnishings so that mom and dad can relax away from the rest of the family. This privacy becomes especially important when the teenagers in the family begin to entertain their friends at home. To establish a modern, informal decor in the new master bedroom, install Marlite planks in a high-fidelity woodgrain. The paneling’s soilproof plastic surface is long-wearing, and it can be damp-wiped clean in a jiffy.
