Reduced Com Crop ■M . *• • Estimated In Stale The October 1 corn estimate for Indiana predicts 15% less corn this year than last year, because of the 22% cut in acreage under the ASC corn plan. Will Winnes, Washington township assessor, released today in figures received from the U.S, department of agriculture experiment station at Purdue University. ' ■ . Prospects for the soybean crop declined in September, according to the report. Plenty Wet Here Crops in this area were reported to have more than adequate moisture — in fact, many farmers around Decatur are complaining that the corn is not drying, and some blame it on heavy nitrogen fertilizing, which brought the state’s per-acre yield up to an estimated 74 bushels per acre, a startling increase over past years. Good weather and increased cultivation and fertilization seem to be making the difference. The indicated production of soybeans is 26% above last year, and 76% above the 1950-59 average: corn is 15% lower than last year, and 15% above the 1950-59 average. Prospective soybean yield per acre was 29 bushels, well, above the previous record of 271 STATE OF INDIANA COUNTY OF ADAMS, 8S NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATRIX’S SALE OF REAL ESTATE IN THE ADAMS CIRCUIT COURT SEPTEMBER TERM. 1»61 CAUSE NO. 5582 ■ IN THE MATTER OF THE ESTATE OF AMANDA A. Corn Storage Despite a Farm Bureau claim that the government has “unloaded” an unusual amount of corn, the old crop corn is estimated at 29,387,000 bushels, double a year ago, and average for the date. Old crop soybeans are a nominal 130,000 bushels. Wheat stocks of 6,887,000 bushels are the same as a year ago, and about 21% under the 1950-59 average, a very good sign. year, the 4,121,000 acres is just 13% less than the 1950-59 average. The 74-bushel-per-acre estimated yield is six bushels an acre above last year’s 68 and well above the 56.1 bushel average for 1950-59. These are just Indiana figures, which are well above the national estimates of 60.5 bushels for this year, 54 for last year, and 44.1 bushels for 1950-59. On September 16, 1961, corn was selling for $1 a bushel. ‘Die 1910-14 average was 58 cents a bushel, but farm prices are such that 58 cents would be worth $1.34 today in purchasing power. This means that a farmer is actually getting 34 cents a bushel less today, in purchasing power, than he got in the 1910-14 period for j the same product. Os course, he I is pioducing many many bushel.’

Check Allegations From Judge Hughes INDIANAPOLIS (UPD-Chalr-i man Arthur Campbell of the Indiana Department of Correction said . a check will be made today of an i allegation by Allen Circuit Judge , W.O. Hughes that “18th century i punishment methods” are used'at the Indiana Girls School. Hughes also declared that Cottage B—the disciplinary unit at the t school—is a fire trap. Campbell . said the state fire marshall plans an inspection Friday. Campbell said he and assistant ■ commissioners James E. McCart ; and Dennis Dowdell would visit the school this afternoon. A staff

meeting of all institutional heads was called for this morning to determine ways of complying with Governor Welsh’s personnel cut- || back order. 1 However, Campbell said he felt charges made to Hughes by a 15-year-old Fort Wayne girl the j judge had committed to the school , ,| on May 12 were not justified with two possible exceptions. Campbell said the girl’s story that she was forced to sleep on the floor of her cell in Cottage 8 and her statement that isolation cells in the attic of the cottage were being used were the only two points which may be justified.
