Indianapolis Mayor Interested In Race INDIANAPOLIS <UPI) —Mayor Charles Boswell of Indianapolis advanced to the brink of a U. S. senatorial candidacy today by visiting Governor Welsh and announcing he is interested in the nomination. Boswell spent 15 minutes in Welsh’s Statehouse office this morning. We he emerged, he announced he would attend at least three Democratic congressional district workshops to discuss his possible candidacy wit! party leaders. Democrats will choose a nominee next summer to run for* the seat in the U. S. Senate now otcupied by Republican Sen. Homer E. Capehart. Capehart is expected to have smooth sailing for the GOP renomination. Defeated in 1960 Boswell ran for lieutenant governor in the 1960 Democratic state convention but was defeated for the nomination by State Sen. Earl Utterback of Kokomo. Utterback then lost in November by a scant 5,000 votes to Reoublican Richard O. Ristine although Governor Welsh, Utterback’s running mate, was elected. Boswell said he will attend a 3rd District workshop at South Bend Tuesday night, a 4th District workshop at Fort Wayne Wednesday night, and a 2nd District workshop later. He indicated he did not ask for Welsh’s support or endorsement in the event he decided to run. But he said Welsh agreed to address a M;'rion County party fund-raising dinner in Indianapolis Saturday night. Ba:h in Some Spot His interest in the nomination seemed to put Boswell in the some position as former House speaker Birch E. Bayh Jr., Terre Haute, who is obviously seeking the nomination although he has not formally announced his candidacy. Bayh has been making speeBayh has been making speeches on national issues for months and roundlv criticizing Capehart. who would be his foe in November next year if : both were nominated bv their respective state conventions.
