Christians Grow Lesson for OcSober «, 1961 /"’KRISTIANS aren’t such a paculiar breed that they stand outside the laws which God has written into nature, the lawn that govern all human beings whether Christian or not The Christian child has to learn his lessons and

team had better be a good player or he won’t get on the team, and that holds for Roman Catholics or Quakers just the name as for atheists. There are certain laws cl growth which are in force at all times and for all persons. The , Christian grows, and can grow, , only in the way that others do, when it comes to physical, mental and social growth. But what about I spiritual growth? How can we, or can we, make progress as Christians? — •'Laars frsm Me" First of all, and most foundational of all, the Christian becomes more of a Christian,—he 1 becomes more Christian in every aspect of his life—, by learning from Jesus. This means at least that Jesus is THE TEACHER, the number One teacher, ot the growing Christian. If we take seriously the claims ot Jesus as we read them in the New Testament, if we take seriously what t the chureh cays about the divine authority ot our Lord, then the " only logical conclusion is: If we take any other authority ahead of the authority of Jesus, we are insincere at worst, inconsistent at best Now we can’t learn from Jesus, we don’t rate the neme ot “disciple” — which is to say, “learner”—if we new read or I stop to think about what Jesus "only tattoos who want to knew, and the Spirit speaks through sometimes common, sometimes wonderful onca-ta-a-lifetlme experiences. ■NTs Wert There is no substitute for God’s ' Word. There is no question of 1 aither-or,—that is, it is not a quea8 tion ot learning about God from the Holy Spirit or from the Scrip- , tore*. It is rather a question of , learning through the Scriptures ’ by the illumination of the Spirit Many of us make a mistake at this point We read the Bible through once, or we read the Sermon on the Mount or some other part of Scripture, and because we have read it once we suppose nothing further can be learned. On the contrary, just > as Jesus in the synagogue, and with his two friends on the road to Emmaus, “opened” the Scriptures which had been familiar yet never rightly understood, sb to this day. Much at Jesus’ teaching (as in the Sermon on the I Mount) consisted in casting fresh light on tiie Scripture. So we can say that one way to learn about ’ God is to study the Bible again ’ and again, in the confident hope ’ that the same Spirit who inspired ’ it will illuminate us. t Ba9’» Will Mi Work Another way in which our knowledge of God can grow is this: to share his will and to f share hie work. This is the way to know any human person; it is the -way to know the divine Person. To know God’s will is to get into 1 his mind. But how can we do this? Best way is to get into the 1 mind of Christ We do know what was his outlook on life. We know enough (or we can learn enough) about what Christ wanted. what he taught and desired ' and commanded, to decide wheth--1 er we dare (as he dared us) to : share his mind, that is to say, ? to make his will our own. (And , tills also can be done only by help of his Spirit) Combined with this approach, not to be separated from it is learning to know God by sharing his work. There need be no impenetrable dark mystery > about what God’s work in this I world is. God is at work making this world better; are you? God is at work making better people: are you? God is working for peace not for war; bow about you? God is working for mercy and kindness and justice; are ■ you sharing ar ana yaa btnfiaa

| ing of yours? It is a great privilege to "hear the Word preached, but we must not let it go at that. Only by reading the Word of God daily can we receive the guidance and the strength to live the Christian life. And we shall find that such regular and prayerful reading of j,he Bible will make church work and church giving a joy. The true Christian life must be continual witnessing to the power and love and grace of Jesus, the Saviour of men. Our Lord said to His disciples, “Ye are even My witnesses.” (Isaiah 44:8). The silent witness of a Christian life transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ is, perhaps, the best contribution that any of us can make to the spread of His kingdom.
