Nixon May Make Decision Tonight
By LYLE C. WILSON United Frees international WASHINGTON (UPI) - If Richard M. Nixon much longer delay* a decision oh Ms immediate political future It will appear be is confused by the situation that confronts him and cannot make up his mind. This would not be a sound judgment of Nixon’s ability to analyze a political situation. It is likely that Nixon’s decision will

be revealed this evening in a Los Angeles news conference. His decision must be, first, whether to continue actively in polities as a aeaker of public office and, second, bow to do this if his decision is to continue. Nixon is being urged by California Republicans to run for governor next year against Democratic incumbent Edmund G. (Pat) Brown. That is a sticky one for Nixon. Brown might lick him
because California Democrats must be expected to vote tn enthusiastic unity against Nixon if he is the Republican candidate. Registered Democrats far outnumber registered Republicans in California. The Democrats must be divided for a Republican to win. Democratic Legislature Assuming that he could be elected governor, Nixon would have to assume also that he would be dealing with a Democratic state legislature. Such a situation is not one likely to make a governor look good. The immediate alternative for Nixon would be to remain on the political bench awaiting 1964 and an opportunity to win again the

Republican presidential nomination. That one also is sticky for Nixon. Politicians, equally with soft drinks, cigarettes and nostrums for stomach disorders, require constant public exposure; advertising. Politicians sitting it out on the bench do not get much of that. Nixon would write newspaper pieces, make speeches and have interviews. All of these would help to keep the public looking his way. The public would be distracted however, by the performance in office of Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York who confidently and with reason expects next year to be elected to a second term. Fans Will Watch A benched politician is like a
bensted baH playw. Tbs fau watch the players on the field. U Nixon announced for governor CaUfomiaas will want to know whether he will serve hls fouryear term nr use the governorship as a step toward the UM Republican presidential nomination. If he already wete governor and merely sought to be rtelected the question would not arise in dangerous form. This question will demand from Nixon a frank answer. If Nixon answers that he want* to be governor to help obtain the IM4 Re* publlcaA presidential nomination, the voters won’t like it. His Chances of election in California will shrink. If he promises to serve a four-year term if elected governor, he will be stuck with
wide open to Rockefeller. Nixon is young enough, 48, to wait until IMS for another shot at the White House, So, too, is Rockefeller. But Rockefeller need not wait and perhaps Nixon must. His alternatives ate not happy ones—the political alternatives, that Is. Nixon’s nofepoUtical alternative is to practise law and grow rich. Against a decision to retire from politics IS the fact that the presidential virus Is incurable. If you have something to sell of trade — use the Democrat Wart ads - they get BfG results.

Is it possible to correct someone’s grammar without being impolite? A. No one likes to be corrected in group conversation, and efforts at improvement of grammar and diction had better be reserved for members of one’s family or friends who might consider them as favors and not insults. Q. When serving wine at a dinner party should the glasses be filled in the kitchen and then brought in to the table? A. No. The wine should be poured into the glases, at the right of each person, and without moving the glasses. Q. Is it necessary to mail engraved wedding invitations to close friends who have already been invited verbally? A. It is ALWAYS correct to mail engraved wedding invitations — even to members of the immediate families.
