BALANCING FURNITURE ARRANGEMENTS to make • room attractive from the patio as well : es from inside the house, is stressed by designers as a means of doubling living enjoyment in modem Thermopane glass-walled homes. Sofas
Glass - walled Rooms Doubly Enjoyable When Planned For Viewing From Patio
To gain more every day enjoyment from your glass-walled living I room, try arranging the furniture “inside out” and make the setting | just as appealing from outside as it is in the room. That’s the advice of leading designers who say that proper furniture placement can result in a setting which is pleasant to view’ from inside the house, and yet equally as attractive from the patio. “Quite often homeowners plan their rooms only from the standpoint of how they will look from inside. While this is of prime importance, furnishings should also be considered with an eye to the effect they will create from the outdoor living areas immediately adjoining the home,” points out Margaret Pilliod, design stylist of Libbey - Owens - Ford Glass company. With picture windows and sliding Thermopane insulating glass doors in common use in homes of all sizes and styles, people are spending more time enjoying “open living,” with patios taking over in warm weather as the center for informal meals and entertaining. I “This means that rooms open- | ing onto the patio must be coni' stdered as part of the over-all outdoor living area, and as such should be arranged to present a pleasing balance of furnishings from outside, and not just when Go-Togethers Because nine out of ten prefer wood cabinets, major appliance manufacturers are offering wood grained fronts on refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers to match factory-finished cabinets.

and occasional chairs are arranged against on inside wall or in “free-standing” groupings which allow easy traffic flow within the rbom and do not block the view from either the patio or the living area. ■ ♦ £
■ viewed from indoors,” Miss Pilliod continued. One of the important points of open planning is the feeling of spaciousness it creates by joining a room to its surroundings in an unbroken expanse, thus making the patio or garden appear as part of the room. To interrupt this indoor-outdoor flow with bulky furnishings is defeating the purpose of the design by isolating the two areas, cutting down the feeling of space and giving the impression from outside that the patio is not an integrated part of the home. One solution to the task of furniture placement is the use of island arrangenfents. By forming occasional chairs, sofas and tables into a free-standing group with an interior wall as the background, ample seating is provided, while leaving the floor area near the window unobstructed. This unit arrangement leaves plenty of floor space for easy indoor - outdoor movement as well as traffic flow within the room itself. For the most part, chairs and sofas are already completely upholstered and suitable for away- - from-the-wall use. Those with un- - finished backs can either be placed 1 against an interior wall, or in many i cases fitted with attractive slip i covers. i In rooms where limited floor space makes it necessary to place furniture close to a window wall in order to provide enough seating. Miss Pilliod advises choosing pieces styled in the contemporary ‘low silouette design. Because they generally extend In width and length rather than height, their Usefulness least interferes with the view both in and out of the room. Expert Ways To Save On Home Repair Usually accustomed to reporting faulty faucets, fireless furnaces or flickering fixtures to the landlord, the new homebuyer often finds himself in the do-it-yourself camp without warning. He quickly learns to replace the washer to stop a leaking faucet; put a piece of cardboard under the hinge to bring a binding door in line; drive a nail at just the right angle to cure a creaking floor. But sooner or later the time will come for the homeowner to deal with the professional repair man. Pointers Outlined The Construction Research Bu-

[ reau, national clearing house for building information, suggests a few pointers: First: Get a written estimate • from two or three sources. No reputable craftsman will commit . himself to a written estimate ■ without making sure he knows pretty closely what his costs are • gojng to be. For example, one simply can’t , call up the floor surfacing man - and ask how much it will cost to tile a kitchen. The reputable mechanic will measure the area, and inspect the surface to learn how much and what type of floor coverings, such as Ken-tile solid vinyl tile, should be used as well as what underlayment material is required. He will show you color samples and discuss pattern — and get your decision — before he can prepare a written estimate, which should state exactly the work to be done, quality of materials to be used and when the job can , be done. If you do not get an estimate in writing, call in some- [ one else. , Second: Ask for the names and addresses of other customers as references and find out how I well satisfied they are. Names f alone prove absolutely nothing, ? A phone call to learn when it might be convenient for you to ..see the installation is only com- , mon courtesy. A few words and ( you’ll see how well satisfied they are. j Study Contract ’ Lastly: But most important, , sign nothing until you’ve read it ( thoroughly and are sure you . understand all the fine print. , The majority firms in the home improvement and repair field are reputable and honest but there are enough fast talking salesmen to keep the Better Business Bureaus on their toes. i A SIMPLE SCREEN made of Parallel-O-Plate mirror panela in r rabbeted grid can simplify decorating “problem” rooms by hiding unsightly doorways without closing them oft. In large rooms the screens, which can be fixed or movable, will divide the area into two separate sections without sacrificing the feeling of openness. The mirror increases natural light and enhances the feelMß of spaciousness.
Mirrored Room Screens Help Overcome Problem Os Too Many Doorways
The distraction of unsightly doorways, ..a decorating proMem facing many homemakers.. .can be easily overcome with screens or movable room dividers of fine plate glass mirror. As is often the case in an average home, especially one more than fifteen years old, the dining room is built with an assortment of doorways leading to the kitchen, pantry, living room, and hallway; bedrooms ordinarily open on a hallway, the bathroom and possibly an adjoining bedroom. In some instances rooms may open on two, three or as many as half-a-dozen adjacent areas. “Such a hodge-podge of doorways can make good decoration almost impossible, unless the more troublesome areas are screened in some way,” points out Roy Anderson, plate glass manager of Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass company. This can be effectively accomplished with little effort by using a screen or partial divider surfaced with Parallel-O-Plate mirror. Besides “masking” the doorway, the mirrored surface becomes an asset to the decoration by reflect, ing the wallpaper, carpeting and other furnishings in the room, Mr. Anderson pointed out. The mirror will make the room appear larger and help make the most possible use of available light. And the screen, in addition to concealing the doorway and whatever room may lie beyond it, also helps cut down drafts throughout the house. The screen itself can be made in a variety of attractive designs, some using large framed* mirror panels, others composed of smaller rectangular panels set in a wooden grid. Using only a few common hand tools, a capable do-it-yourself carpenter can build a screen in a few hours. •_ NATURE AND COLOR The new look garden uses the bright colors of modern plastic panels set in frames of long-lasting western red cedar to make interesting screening fences.
Best Builders Still Depend OnVersatility of Woodwork
Model homes on view during National Home Week will feature a host of revolutionary new building materials — plastics, fiber glass, metals, ceramics—which have been arriving on the •market and gaining acceptance in recent years. But despite their prominence, there’s one age-old building material that will be even more in evidence. several solid reasons architects specify and builders continue to rely on wood. It is light-weight, staong, durable, and workable. It haves on labor costs, since a variety of sizes and styles of standard units sudn as doors, windows, shutters, fireplaces, and staircases of ponderosa pine come from the factory ready to install. Modem methods of treating i ponderosa pine doors and windows give them a useful life at least as long as the structures they serve. . . .. . Wood also is a natural insulating material. Tests have shown

Kitchen Pinners ' Learn Advantages Os Wood Cabinets There are only five basic design plans for efficient kitchens but there are hundreds of variations, kitchen specialists were told at a recent ‘training school. The basic arrangements were described as (1) one-wall or puljmantype kitchens, (2) two-wall or corridor kitchens, (3) L-shape or corner kitchens, C 4) U-shape or three-wall kitchens and (5) peninsulaor island kitchens. Trainees were advised to use imagination, tempered by family preferences and needs, in planning a kitchen. Since nine out of ten homemakers prefer wood kitchens, the following advantages in working with standard factory-finished cabinets were pointed out: Wood base and wall cabinets begin at 9 inches in width and go up to 48 inches, advancing by 3 inch modules. Stock base cabinets are either 30 or 36 inches high with countertops and usually are 24 inches deep. Wall units are available in heights ranging from 13 to 45 inches and usually are 12 inches deep. Island base units generally are 48 inches square. Peninsula base and wall cabinets follow standard width dimensions of 18 to 48 inches. Bases are 24 inches and wall units are 12 inches deep. * Snack and bar bases range from 24 to 48 inches wide and 18 to 22 inches deep. Built-in units to house ovens, refrigerators and freezers, ranges and dishwashers are available in stock sizes for most appliances. Special purpose cabinets, such as tall utility units, mixer, towel, tray, breadbox, vegetable and beverage bases also are available as standard furniture-finished items.

Naw Insalalion For Masonry Wails Cott HM Loss and Air-Conditioning Costs When you buy a horfie. you should carefullv weigh two costs: the monthly mortgage payment and the cost of upkeep, heating, and utilites. Over the centuries, masonry walls have proved their durability. Now, a new low cost, water-repellent verrmcultte has been developed for insulating them. It is a loose-fill material that is poured directly from the bag into the cores of concrete masonry units or into a hollow (cavity* masonry wall. Contractors say it flows like sand into every chink and cranny. _ . Actual installations show that the fill reduces heat loss up to 60 per cent and air-conditioning costs as much as 25 per cent, according to the Vermiculite Institute of Chicago, One of the major advantages of the material is the “comfort environment” it, provides for a building’s occupants and the improved livability it creates in basement rooms, the Institute says. Time studies show that the average workman can insulate about 500 square feet of wart area in less than an hour. Builders quote the cost at about 10c per square foot for labor and materials. FHA announced the suitability of water-repellent vermiculite in properties eligible for FHA mortgage insurance, Bulletin UM-30 of March 1, 1961, to FHA regional offices. „ September is National Insulation Month, a good time to check on new deevlopments in insulating materials.
