CREAMED COMMENTS CREAMED COMMENTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON, AQUILA AND PRISCILLA, ABLE TEACHERS, Acts 18: 1-3, 18-21, 24-28; Romans 16:3-sa, for Sunday, September 10. - Upon his arrival in Corinth, during his second missionary journey, Paul discovered a remarkable Jewish Christian couple, Aquila and Priscilla, who were to play a large part in his future ministry. The purpose of the lesson is to show from a study of this couple why adults should give themselves more fearlessly and sacrificially to the cause of Christ. Vs. 1-3 “After these things paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife, Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought; for by their occupation they were tentmakers.” This was Paul’s first visit to Corinth, capital of Greece, and a melting pot of peoples and nationalities. Here Aquila and Priscilla came when they were forced to flee from Rome in 49A. D. as a result of a decree by Emperor Claudius' banishing all Jews as trouble-' makers. They worked as weavers of goats’ hair cloth, used for tents. As a boy, Paul had also learned this trade, so he abode with them and worked with them. Lay Christians render valuable service' in promoting the Christian gospel. Paul was attracted to this couple by the bonds of similar religion and trade. Vs. 18-21. “And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila having shorn his head in Cenchrea:

Work cannot be divorced from J worship since a true Christian is concerned with the spirit he has toward his job as well as its nature. A true Christian judges his work by the standards of his faith. His labor must meet a need and contribute to the common good. It is not enough for him to work; he must be engaged in a socially necessary service. He must also concern himself with the spirit that infuses his work, the objective toward which is moves, and the principles around which it is organized. A Christian cannot divorce work and worship, and them a Christian prays, "Not my will, but thine, be done,” he is actually promising that he will express God’s will in the place he works. The church proclaims the practical applications of Christ’s teachings, helping one express God’s will in his daily life. WHY NOT ACCEPT THE INVITATION AND COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? 1 ■■■■ " ■■■■!..■ Kl— 111 for he had a vow — And he come to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews .. When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; — But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Eiihesus.” Paul stayed in Corinth 18 months and while there established one of the strongest churches of Europe. With his mission accomplished, he set sail for Syria by way ot Ephesus. In Corinth short hair was the sign of a slave so Paul wore his hair long while there and aftre his mision was accomplished there, he trimmed his hair. At Ephesus, Paul began his ministry by preaching in the synagogue where he won great favor. He was anxious to ge to Jerusalem in time for the spring feast where he hopde to preach the Christian gospel to the many who would be assembled there, so he left Aquila and Priscilla to carry on the work of the church at Ephesus, where he hoped to return when God willed. Vs. 24, 25. “And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.” Apollos believed in the messiahship of Jesus but was without adequate knowledge of hjs life and atonement, and, while an eloquent speaker, he stresed only the importance of baptism and repentance and did not know apparently the importance of the Holy Spirit. Vs. 26-28. “And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly .. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped thme much which had believed through his grace: For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.” It was fortunate that Apollos had the grace and humility to be willing to learn from two tentmakers despite his greater intellectual attainments, and that Aquila and Priscilla had the tact, the knowledge and power to teach a man of Apollos’ stature so that and faith and was able to minister he grew in Christian knowledge most effectively to the Jews in Achaia.
