Black Hills Os South Dakota Provide Lore RAPID CITY, S.D. (UPD-The pine-covered Black Hills of South Dakota provide the backdrop for pome of the world's outstanding sculpture, the continent’s biggest •old mine and lore almost as rich. Shce the discovery of gold in the 1870 s, it has made the Black Hills fjie most productive area of the rius metal in North America, whole town of Deadwood is Underlain with mining tunnels. ‘The gold rush of the ’7os lured many characters to Deadwood. Scars of the miners' court which tried McCall for the shooting of Hickok in 1876. A year and a half ago, Deadwood nearly went up in smoke when a fire got out of hand and surrounded the town. Years of the burned out 550 acres of treeland f still remain. Nearby, an electric chair lift at Terry Peak used by skiers in the winter, is available for summer visitors to reach an elevation of 7,000 feet from where four states are visible. All is not play in the Black Hills. Just east of Rapid City, fast-growing, largest city in the hills, is Ellsworth Air Force Base, a huge military installation with 852 s and KCl3ss. Titan missile bases are under construction near- • Buffalo, Deer Roam '„Some 1,000 head of buffalo, 400 deer, 300 elk and 300 Rocky fountain goats roam through just ■ one part of the hills, the highest mountain range east of the Rockies and one of the oldest geologic elevations on the continent. The hills are about 120 miles long and 60 miles wide. Custer State Park, about 100 square miles in the southern hills, afford several state-owned lodges and cabins and camping facilities g at moderate prices. President Coolidge and President Eisenhower both visited the f state game lodge. Fishing and horseback riding are permitted at all lodges and resorts in the park. Any doubts I may have had about America’s ability to explore the heavens with well-fed astronauts were removed Monday as I watched a demonstration of the world’s first “space kitchen.” Talk about your kitchen gadgets! The space kitchen was designed by the Whirlpool Corp, and Miss Furness works for Westinghouse. But even without Betty, the kitchen gives us something the Russians presumably don’t have. If I had charge of the Soviet space program, I would start worrying about the calory gap.

Efficiency Kitchen At first glance, the kitchen looks like something you might find in a modern efficiency apartments It has built-in cabinets, oven, refrigerator, freezer and garbage disposal. The big difference Is that the space kitchen had to be designed so that the English peas would not fall off the pantry shelf during blast-offs or float out of reach during weightlessness. To lick this problem, the Whirlpool people did away with silverware and cooking utensils. They -

put all the food in cans and the beverages in plastic tubes. At meal time, the weightless spaceman witf~drift into the kitchen, take a can of swiss steak from the refrigerator and put it in the oven. If he starts to drift off, he can grab hold of a railing on the cabinets. The can has a cap on the top and bottom. When the steak is hot, the astronaut removes the caps and fastens a nipple to one end of the can. At the other end he attaches an expelling device.
