Adams Central Retains Eastern Wabash Valley Track Crown Wednesday
The Adams Central Greyhounds successfully defended their Eastern Wabash Valley conference track and field championship at Berne Wednesday, scoring 68 points while runner-up Berne tallied 43 points, Geneva’s fine Glen Lehman wps the individual star of the meet, copping blue ribbons in the high hurdles, low hurdles, and the pole vault. Other scores were Ossian, 41; Lancaster, 28%; Geneva, 27%; Monmouth, 17. Seven new meet records were set in this second annual track meet of the conference. Records were set by Ayres of Lancaster in the 880, Sprunger of Berne in the mile, Baumer of Geneva in the shot put, Arnold of Adams Central in the high jump, Lehman of Geneva in the pole vault, and in both relay races. Pancho Gonzales Is Pro Tennis Champion CLEVELAND, Ohio (UPI) — Pancho Gonzales, the king, once again is pn the throne. The 33-year-old Californian, playing like a man much younger, won his eighth world pro tennis championship Wednesday night here by overwhelming Frank Sedgman, 6-3, 7-5. Gonzales, who won seven times in a row and then did not defend ithi title last year because of legal trouble, pocketed $3,500 for his winning effort. Goodyear And Union Sign New Contract CLEVELAND. Ohio (UPl>—The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. Wednesday signed a two-year wage agreement with the United Rubber Workers Union covering employes in 11 plants, including one at Muncie, Ind. The agreement, covering about 20.000 Workers, provides a 14% .cent an, hour increase over the next two years and an eighth paid holiday to be selected locally. New Haven Is Again NEIC Track Champ The New Haven Bulldogs successfully defended their Northeastern Indiana conference track and field championship at Columbia City Wednesday, piling up 64 points to runner-up Columbia City’s 39% points. Decatur’s Yellow Jackets placed six among the ten league teams, totaling 17 points. Garrett was third' with 25 points, Angola finished fourth with 20 points, Elmhurst totaled 18 points, while Bluff ton, Concordia, Kendallville, and Auburn finished behind Decatur with 13, 13, 12, and 3% points, respectively. Three conference records were broken, Jerry Thomas of Garrett cracked the two hurdle records, and Jim Stewart of Elmhurst broke the shot put record. Denny Bollenbacher of Decatur placed third in the 100 yard dash and second in the 220 yard dash. j while Dan Poling finished fifth in the 100. The Jackets’ half-mile relay team placed third, Herb Magley of Decatur set a new Decatur high school record in the shot put, but good only for third place in the meet. (UPI)— Ronnie Hughes, whose pair of free throws won the 1961 Indiana high school basketball tourney for Kokomo, and football star Clarence Foster have signed athletic tenders to enroll at Purdue University. Hughes said he had offers from all but two Big Ten schools, plus many others. There were three seconds left in the overtime when he connected for the game-win-ning points against Indianapolis Manual last March.
