Science Seminar Held Last Evening

How physics and mathematics help solve industrial problems was explained .to the Decatur science seminor students, advanced students from both Decatur high schools, by Charles S. Tl>ompson. inventor of the elactic coaxial cable and other famous inventions, Tuesday night The seminar program, sponsored and arranged by the Decatur Jaycees, is chairmaned by Dick Galbreath, of Central Soya Co. ; evening. Thompson explained that in the anti-submarine warfare division, an elastic coaxial cable, which allows electrical impulses to travel its length despite its elasticity, was needed- This would allow a record box to rest undisturbed at the bottom of the ocean, while a floating buoy, bobbing on the surface, was still connected by the coaxial cable. He explained the many problems involved, the steps necessary to solve the problems, the mathematical formulae >vhich were devised to aid the scientists, and the finished equation which set up the necessary theory behind the invention. Average Students Needed "Young men and women interested in physics need not be straight-A brains," Thompson pointed out. Much of the work, he continued, is actually plodding work done by those who persist, day after day, week-after-week, in the study of difficult problems, rather than flash solutions by "brain-trusters.” Thompson, senior staff engineer with the advanced development engineering department of the Magna vox company, has been responsible for the design and production of solenoids, synchrornechanisms, and associated test equipment. He developed cath-ode-ray circuits; mechanical oscilloscope to produce the wave forms of minute mechanical motions; a 300-cycle carrier system for submarine telegraphy; powdered iron, high-Q, torroidal dust cores; entronstatic device to dry colored printer’s ink; and many other projects. An author of many technical papers, he holds a patent for inventions in the field of alternating current telegraph relays. Present Work He is presently engaged in the field of thermo-electric devices and ferro-electric energy converters. Attendance at the meeting was cut by a number of other community projects at the same time, and it is now planned to have Thompson return next fall at another seminar program. In 1925 Thompson received his bachelor of electrical engineering degree frorri Ohio State University, and his MS in physics from New York University.

The Future Farmers 4-H club of Kirkland township met at the Pleasant Dale parish hall Tuesday evening. Rene Brown, vice president, was in charge of the meeting. The pledges were led by Dan Lantz, Jr., and the group singing was under the direction of David Arnold. Bob Kershner gave a brief talk on hogs and Steve Landis spoke on electricity. A project tour and swimming party were discussed by the group. The recreation period was led by James Hill, after which refreshments were served by the leaders. The next meeting will be held at the Pleasant Dale parish hall. The date will be announced at another time. Reporter: Stanley Hill New York Stock Exchange Prices Midday Prices A.
