Mazeroski's Homer Paces Pirates Win By FRED DOWN United Press International It took just one swish of Bill Mazeroski’s bat to make the Pittsburgh Pirates and their fans tingle with World Series excitement again today. And you can’t tell those rabid Pittsburgh fans that the replica of the homer Mazeroski hit last Oct. 13 to win the World Series doesn’t mean the Pirates haven’t shaken their early-season blues. Mazeroski, whose average had dwindled to a mere .179, connected against Moe Drabowsky Monday night to lift the Pirates to a 7-6 victory over the Milwaukee Braves and into a three-way tie for second place in the National League. It was Mazeroski's first homer since his historic ninth-in-ning smash gave the Pirates their ninth-inning 10-9 triumph over the New York Yankees last autumn. Near Same Spot The blow rose in a high trajectory and soared over the fence only about 30 feet to the left of the “big one” Mazeroski hit off Ralph Terry. It sent the Pirates in front, 5-4, and enabled Bob Friend to gain his third straight win of the season with the relief aid of Clem Labine in the ninth. It was the only National League game of the day or night but the Detroit Tigers ran their winning streak to eight games with a 4-3 decision over the New York Yankees, the Cleveland Indians whipped the Baltimore Orioles, 5-1, and the Minnesota Twins beat KOTICE OF ADMINISTRATION Estate No. 5641 in the Adams Circuit Court of Adams County, Indiana, notice is hereby given that Er»« Rabbitt was on the 10th day of April, 1961, appointed: Administratrix of the estate of Ralph V. Bill Reed Is New Big Ten Commissioner CHICAGO (UPI) — Bill Reed will take office July 1 as the third commissioner in Big Ten history under a five-year contract at an estimated $20,000 a year. Reed was chosen unanimously Monday by the presidents of the 10 member institutions to succeed Kenneth L. Reed, 45, has been assistant commissioner of the conference for 10 years and earlier worked in the conference office for two different periods, first from 1939 through 1942 when he organized the conference service bureau under Commissioner John L. Griffith and from 1945 through 1947 when he was Wilson’s executive assistant. “I hope that I may make as many contributions to athletics as my two predecessors,” Reed said. Wilson will go on terminal leave as commissioner at full pay for one year and later will receive a pension from the conference under a fund begun more than 10 years ago.
