Pay TV Tesl Is Held Sunday Night By JACK GA VER UPI Drama Editor NEW YORK (UPI)— Pay TV producers today tried to discover whether their audience thought a Broadway show was worth $1.50 per front-row-center living room. “Show Girl,” starring Carol Channing, was piped to 5,800 payTV subscribers in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke Sunday night in the first telecast of an actual theater performance. Theater ticket price is $6.90 for an orchestra seat. “It will be impossible for us to tell how many subscribers ‘bought’ this particular attraction until a meter check has been made,” said Louis A. Novins, president of Telemeter, who. was at the Eugene O’Neil Theater for the telecast. “One thing S is certain. We are going to make a thorough subscriber survey immediately to find out just what people thought of the show,” Novins said. My personal reaction, watching it on a monitor set in the theater, was that, at $1.50 a family, it might just barely satisfy viewers who never get to the theater, but that it would be tremendously disappointing to regular play goers. Because of the very nature of “Show Girl,” an intimate revue with little in the way of scenery and costuming, it lacked much of the visual appeal on the TV screen that comes with most of the regular viriety and drama shows that the networks provide free. On the other hand, the material and the performers were just as entertaining as in any theater performance, and there was the plus of closeups of the players’ faces which you can’t get in the theater. Steinwedel Joins Insurance Agency SEYMOUR, Ind. <UPI> —Former Indiana State Auditor Albert A. Steinwedel, unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination last year, has joined the Carl J. Rennekamp Agency here. He will represent the Ohio National Life Insurance Co. in Southern Indiana. A native of Seymour. Steinwedel was in the clothing business before entering politics.

Urges Testing Os Soybeans For Seed Soybeans for seed should germinate at least 80 per cent, says A. C. Carter, director of seed control at Purdue University. Seed lots germinating below that figure are apt to lack vigor, he adds. Os the first 300 samples tested in 1961 at Purdue, 27 per cent were below 80 per cent in germination and half of those were below 70 per cent. Counterbalancing this, 31 per cent germinated 90 per cent or above —very good for soybeans and above average. Carter reports. What does this mean? Carter says probably some lots are better than common and some are worse. Farmers in southwestern Indiana especially are having difficulty with the germination of soybeans, due to an infestation of pod blight in some areas and to harvesting of immature beans in other areas. “The cost of seed is small compared to other farming costs and yet it is all important,” Carter states. Farmers should first get the variety best adapted to their area and farming operation. If farmers keep their own seed, it should be tested. Carter advises. Free tests are available for all citizens of Indiana in the state seed laboratory. A sample should be carefully drawn so that it truly represents the lot and should consist of at least a pint of seed, which should be carefully identified and sent to the state seed laboratory, Purdue University, Lafayette.
