is popular with new home buyers because its center-hall, twostory design provides four or more bedrooms at lower cost on the second floor, plus larger living, dining, and kitchen space on the first floor. Many leading builders and architects agree these advantages, as well as a trend toward more gracious living, will make Colonial-atvle homes of this type the moat ular design in 1961 and far jmors to come. ””~
Windows Today Easier to Wash Give a thought to future window washing when you choose windows for remodeling an old house or building a new one. Windows of ponderosa pine are available today in many styles and types that make washing windows less of a chore and much safer. Some models have sash that can be lifted out of the frame for easy washing inside the house. Others—such as many casement, awning and hopper styles—open so that both sides of the glass can be cleaned from inside. These innovations do away with dangerous ladder-climbing and bucket-hauling. By making window washing easier, they also encourage cleaning windows more often, resulting in a better, neater-looking house inside and out. WOOD RESISTS HEAT Air conditioning engineers have less of a “heat gain” problem when a house has wood windows. Frames and sash of windows of ponderosa pine are natural insulators. The wood resists the flow of heat from outside instead of conducting it into the house, as metal sash and frames do.

A small kitchen? Certainly not a Mr one, but its conveniences are huge. Precious counter space is saved and a breakfast bar is added by the island electric range, a free-standing model that looks built in. The electric dishwasher under the window at left is used to store dishes used daily after it washes them hygienically clean. Other features unusual in a kitchen of this site include electric refrigerator-freezer plus separate big-capacity freezer, complete electric laundry, and handy desk with telephone.
Big kitchens are fine, but it's not necessary to have a vast amount of space to work with if you plan to remodel an old kitchen or design one for a new home. Today’s new electric appliances make it possible to create an efficient, complete kitchen in an area housewives of a few years ago wouldn’t have considered big enough for a pantry. Today’s new electric ranges and their components, for example, offer many solutions for space problems. Surface cooking units are available that “drop” compactly into the top of a cabinet. Others fold up out of the way when not in use, while still others slide away like a drawer. Electric ovens can be installed in a wall space that once was worthless except to hang a calendar. Even the cook’s dream —two ovens—can be built in
Good Insulation - Key to Low Cost Electric Heating
Good insulation keeps heat in during the winter and out during the summer. To enjoy the comforts of electric heating and air conditioning at far less cost, you will need adequate insulation. An actual test case conducted by a utility involved a 20 ft. by 30 ft. bungalow with basement. As a demonstration of how insulation can affect operating costs, it was assumed that the owner was charged 2 cents per kilowatt hour. His bill for electric heat would be S4BO jser year if the house lacked insulation altogether. Mineral Wool With mineral wool insulation in the ceiling, heat loss would naturally be reduced and the home owner’s bill would be $282 per year. If insulation were placed under the floor and in the walls, his cost would be SIBO. Should storm windows be added, the cost would be $136. Clearly, the best time to insulate a home properly is during construction. Builders are coming to realize that a well-insulated home has a powerful selling feature and enhanced resale value. Detects Leaks Now they've developed a paint which tells whether there are leaks in tanks or pipes. Immediately after the paint has been applied, the pipe or tank is filled with ammonia gas. As the gas bubbles through holes as small as 1/1000 of an inch in diameter, the yellow color of the paint changes to a bluish purple. Once the leak has been detected, the paint may be washed off with water or wiped away with a cloth.

without taking up precious floor or counter space. Another modern appliance that solves problems in “tight” kitchens is a portable electric dishwasher. It rolls to the sink as easily as a kitten on a carpet, washes an entire day’s dishes and utensils hygienically clean, then rolls away to a handy corner. Some models with choppingblock tops actually add more kitchen work space. All models add storage space, since dishes used daily can be stored in the dishwasher itself. Built-in dishwashers fit neatly under a counter. Today’s models are compact, but will usually handle the day s tableware for the average family. They make small kitchens seem bigger by eliminating mess. Dishes go directly from table to dishwasher with no need for rinsing.
House Without Cooling Obsolete in Few Years If you plan to build a home, here’s something to keep in mind: A house without air conditioning will be as obsolete in a few years as a house without a bathroom is today. This means that even if you don’t plan to install air conditioning right away, you’d be wise to spend a little extra for proper mineral wool in walls, ceilings, and floors when you build. It’ll be there to give you economical operation when you decide you can afford a cooling system. Meanwhile the extra insulation W’ill make your house more comfortable as well as help reduce heating costs. Planters Are ‘Smart’ An attractive planter in the living, dining or recreation room serves as an interesting decorative feature. Framed with lumber and finished with plasticfinished paneling in a handsome woodgrain, it will add “eye appeal” to any room. This predecorated hardboard material can also be applied over an old planter to renew its appearance. The smooth plastic finish can be kept clean with a damp wiping. Design Accent Wall Original effects can be achieved by using planks and blocks together, combining colors or woodgrains and devising interesting vertical or horizontal accent wall hardboard panels—the planks are treatments. These predecorated 16” wide and 8' long and the blocks 16” square—are available at lumber yards in 10 “companion colors”.
It’s a Breeze To Enclose Breezeway When a family begins to outGow its house, its members ,ve three choices: continue to live in cramped surroundings, move into a bigger home, or expand the house. Today, thousands of home owners lucky enough to have a porch or breezeway are finding new space by enclosing these areas. This type of expansion usually is the most inexpensive of all. There’s rarely a need for costly foundation building, and the roof generally is in place along with one or two walls. Often much, if not all, of the work can be done by the home owner himself if he’s handy with tools. This eliminates the most expensive item in remodel-ing-labor. Today’s home handyman has a tremendous advantage in his do-it-yourself home improvement projects: modern building materials. Among these are windows of ponderosa pine, ideal for porch and breezeway enclosures. They are available in complete units with frame and sash pre-assem-bled at the factory, and with hardware and weatherstripping installed. All the home handyman has to do is lift the unit into its opening, make sure it’s shimmed and level, then nail it in place. This ease of installation results in savings even when the job is done by a professional. The units go m place quickly, reducing the cost of labor. Other modern building materials that can make a porch or breezeway enclosure a complete do-it-yourself project include mineral wool insulation, floor and ceiling tiles, wall paneling, and tough, new paints that dry free of brush marks. Planning Pays In Reroofing Planning to reroof this spring? Having a new roof of asphalt shingles applied on your home is as easy as telephoning a roofing contractor, but you may be happier with the job if you take a few preliminary steps. Here are some suggestions: 1. Find a reliable roofing contractor who will apply your asphalt shingles skillfully. A proper application insures that ’they will give the trouble-free service and long life for which they were designed. 2. Decide on a color. Asphalt shingles come in a wide range of colors, and the materials dealer or roofer can show you samples, Choose a dark color if your nouse is tall, a light color if it is low. • 3. If your house is in an area subject to high winds, give some thought to a wind-resistant application of asphalt shingles to insure protection from your home even in gales of hurricane force. 4. Ask the roofer if he can apply your new roof over the old one. Asphalt shingles can be applied directly over old roofing in most cases. This saves the mess afid expense of ripping off the old material and provides a measure of protection in case of rain before the job is finished. 5. A new roof of asphalt shingles is less expensive than you may think because it is low in applied cost. But if you want to finance it with a loan, ask your bank for an FHA-insured home improvement f loan. These are available for rdroofing and other modernization at low interest and may be repaid over a period of five vears

Air Conditioners Accurately Rated By Btu Capacity The easiest and surest way to obtain the right-sized room air conditioner for any room is to provide an appliance dealer with enough information to Prescribe the “Btu” capacity needed for “gSSeffi* 'thermal unit, —are used today by manufacturers to describe the cooling capacities of modern air conditioners. Old “horsepower and ‘ton” designations have been abandoned in favor of this more accurate method of measuring the amount of heat a cooling unit can handle. . One Btu per hour is roughly the amount of heat generated by a kitchen match if it were to burn an hour. An air conditioner labeled 12,000 Btu’s, for example, would remove the neat of approximately 12,000 matches. Here’s the basic information the appliance dealer will need to help choose an air conditioner for a given room: 1 Size of room and what its used for, such as living room, - bedroom, dining room, or family TOOm. . -x * -j2. Exposure of its outside walls—south, north, east, or west, —and the number of windows facing south or west. 3. Its location in relation to other areas of the house: under roof; uninsulated attic, or occupied room. ’ 4. Electric circuits available: 115, 230. or 208 yolts. A wide selection of room air conditioners now is available, including window units, models that install permanently through a wall, and units that provide year around comfort —cool in summer, heat in winter. Standards of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association now provide that a room air conditioner s cooling capacity in Btu’s per hour be imprinted on the data plate. Brighten Old Fireplace One of the best ways to increase the visual interest in a fireplace is to install a Peg-Board panel in either a handsome woodgrain or distinctive marble pattern on the wall behind the firei place. More than 60 hooks and fixtures are available for hanging ! pictures, decorative plaques, small ' plants, knick-knacks and other items on this accent panel. The predecorated hardboard, can be kept clean with an occasional damp wiping. Carrying Glass When carrying a large pane of glass, slit a piece of garden hose , lengthwise and slip over the bottom and top edges to act as a grip. This will help prevent breakage [and injury to hands. Paint System { ' To keep stairway in use while it is being painted, split the painting job into two halves. Do every other step the first day. Allow’ this to dry overnight and paint alternate steps the next day. Warm Putty When replacing a broken window in cold weather, heat a brick and lay putty on it while working. This keeps the putty soft and oily. ' ’’ Prevents Rusting Apply a thin coat of paste wax jto metal parts and handles of hand tools used outdoors to prevent rusting and keep tools free of dirt.
