New Fashions for Men Spur Spring “Dress-Up” Urge

British Look Featured In Sportswear Men’s sportswear styling for spring speaks with a definite “British Accent,” This new look will give men the handsome traditional outdoor look they prefer—yet with a more sophisticated expression than that foupd in the youthful Ivy models. In patterns the British clasics take a leading role with racetrack plaids and checks. Other designs take their cue from “Commonwealth” fabrics such as batik prints and India madras. Heather tones keyed to the

English moors, British blue, desert tones, rusts, camels and, of course, a continuation of the currently popular olive and gold shades—these are among the outstanding colors. The entire wash-wear concept shows further gains in all sportswear. New technical advances in both fabrics and constructions give the wash-wears an increased performance factor. Variety of Styles Spring sport shirts reach new highs in variety of styling. In addition to new British types, there are Ivy versions and a new group of updated Continentals. Pull-over models in cut-and-sewn shirts are again among the top favorites. They boast many types of collar styles, too. New in the pullovers are lowered pockets, a variety of lengths and some with tapering bodies. Jacket-shirts are making a comeback —mostly in heavier fabrics and in solid colors. Many are coodinated with walk shorts, slacks

Shirt fabrics include homespun or burlap type weaves, tight meshes, linen-types and tone-on-tone weaves. Watch for more bright solid colors, too. Suits Falling into Three Categories Men's business clothes for spring fall into three big divisions of constructions and weights, according to the American Institute of Men’s and Boy's Wear, and there are at least six or seven overlapping styles from which to choose. Tattersail effects will be popular in the new spring suits. Version above features lighter than usual background color. “Dacron” and wool. for the average man to find exactly the right type and style of suit to meet his needs. For example, consider the three basic weights. In most sections of the country the weather from early spring until well into May is still quite chilly, but warmer than wintry. Thus, for the early spring season we find a relatively new fabric category called “mid-weights.” These are not as heavy as winter ' weights nor are they as light as summer weights. As we move into late spring and early summer, tropical weights are the choice of a businessman seekngi comfort plus crisp appearance. These fabrics may be blends of worsted with man-made fiber's, aUtropical worsteds, blends of mohair or silk with worsted, or all-silks for the fellow seeking a touch of luxery. . — - However, few summer garments managed to withstand the clammy discomfort of the hot humid weather of mid-summer or the rigors of summer travel until new feather-weight suitings came along. Among the favorite feather-weights are the increasingly popular washwears. Three Basic Weights These three basic weights and types come in a wonderful word of colors and patterns. Soft olive shades continue to be among the most wanted, while medium to dark grays, dressy blacks, medium grayed-tans, browns and the always popular navy blues are runner-up favorites. Plaids, checks and stripes vie with neat self-weave patterns and plain hopsack-type weaves. The suiting patterns are a bit bolder, than they have been in the past. t3 As for styling, suit silhouettes are trim, jackets are a mite shorter and the lines are easy and flattering. American Continental models have been modified, and are not quite as short or as rounded as they were a season ago. The more drastically modified Continentals are called “Trans-Americans.”
