New House Might Heed Modernizing A brand new tract house, ideal as it may be, always has room for improvement. The unfinished basement is a prime example of an essential facelifting for modern living. Great improvement in the appearance and function of such a basement can be accomplished with a modest expenditure for materials. If the owners are do-it-yourself enthusiasts, they can do the work themselves, gaining both personal satisfaction for their efforts as well as earning an increase in the value of their property. s Sound planning accompanied by a bit of inspired dreaming, can transform a drab basement into just about anything the family wants: A family playroom, a combination recreation area and home office, a combination of recreational facilities with hobbies and sewing, and the like. Study Your Project The smart owners, with such a project in mind, will check over published articles and books and then make their decisions

with this background and their own requirements in a happy merger. They can ask the advice of informed friends, especially if these include a builder or architect, aad chock with the community’s building inspector to be sure they are on a sound basis. They should prepare sketches to put their dreams into black and white and then, have them checked by someone who knows about remodeling. Materials they’ll use in the basement face-lifting are a major consideration. They should be selected for their appearance, wearing qualities, paint-holding characteristics, economy and function. Wall Materials Important Since the major materials expenditure will involve walls and ceiling, particular attention should be paid to their selection. Many home owners, facing a project of this type, have found Masonite hardboards well suited to the improvement. Hardboards are available at lumber yards in woodgrained panels or planks that may be clipped in place against furring strips; embossed boards like Seadrift, which can be given a two-toned finish; and smooth-surfaced ones that can be painted. Permanent Finishes, Too Also, suitable for families wanting a permanent finish are
Helpful Hints on Buying Screens; How to Measure With warm weather and the insect season fart approaching, ft it time to tespe®* .T° Ur screens. Are they twisted, warped, split, rusty or unsightly from peeled paint? Will they add to the appearance of your home when you put them up for the summer? And are they heavy and unwieldy to handle? ______ Due for the trash heap and replacement are those whose frames are rotten, split, warped, or paint-peeled or whose insect screening is such that rain water running off will give the house rust or .. corrosion stains. £ - The home owner needing new window screens faces such prob- a ~ - I lems as where to go for new screens, what kind to order, how to tell quality, what is new? Since window screens vary widely in BBtil tses and quality, the unwary or inexperienced replacement screen JmSJ _ buyer can easily wind up with something that he doesn’t want or TpM&l Z—— ~'"' Z [T pS? 1 wishes later he didn’t have. wßf The Screen Manufacturers Association, whose members produce jar screen components, and sometimes finished screens, urges the home owner to pay as close attention to buying window, porch, or patio screens as he would to any other property improvement—and thia means to seek quality. While the primary purpose of screens is to keep out insects, * many factors are to be colsidered in buying new screens. They inelude the investment required, whether the screens being considered are impervious to deterioration from weather and proof against staining the house because of rust or corrosion, whether they are light in weight and compact, their general appearance, whether' they can be easily and inexpensively repaired if damaged, and whether they can be easily handled and stored. HHHHfo**rib» ' The S.M.A. urges those buying screens to take their problems to established and reputable screen fabricators and dealers experienced in making aluminum frame screens with either aluminum or fibrous glass insert screening. The gauge or thickness of the aluminum used in making the frame is of paramount importance along with care in fabrication. Experienced reputable fabricators will recommend the correct gauge for specific screens. While screen fabricators offer professional measuring service, the S.M.A. says that the home owner himself can save time and labor costs by measuring double hung wood windows for screens. It advises: Measure carefully and precisely with a rigid measuring stick or steel tape dimensions on the outside of the blind stops (the outermost strips of wood attached to the window frame) where the stops join the frame: HORIZONTAL—At the top (A to B), at the bottom (E. to F) and midway between top and bottom (C to D.) PERPENDICULAR—AIong both sides (A to E and B to F.) DIAGONAL—Between opposite and lower corners <A to F and B to E). These dimensions are essential to guide the aluminum frame screen fabricator because wood windows frequently are out of square from warping, settling, and other causes. It is of A-l importance to tell the fabricator that yours are “full” measurements with no allowance or tolerance for slipping the screens into position. A clear, though unprofessional, sketch that indicates, the various measurements for each screen would also be helpful.
plastic finished harboards panels such as Marlite. These come in woodgrains and pastel shades and are suitable for wall and ceiling surfaces as well as courier tons. Other materials meriting serious . consideration include floor coverings, lights, ventilating and heating facilities. The ABC’s then, of such a project are: Decide what is right for the family’s requirements; consult people who know about construction; make a wise selection of building materials,

Not visible in the photo are electric refrigera-tor-freezer, automatic electric laundry, and big food freezer. Gold Medallion homes also have multiple outlets for electric house* wares, and soft, generous lighting.
Which would you rather buy: a house in which you take the electrical features pretty much on faith or one your local electric utility has thoroughly inspected and officially certified, a Gold Medallion home? The latter kind is guaranteed “electrically tops” and nowadays is widely available in almost every size, design and price range. Here are some typical features of a Gold Medallion home: Adequate wiring—ends fear of blowing fuses. Appliances always work at peak efficiency. Copious outlets and switches—you can plug in your electric housewares, radio or TV almost anywhere you deem convenient. Light switches are abundant to end groping in the dark. All-electric kitchen—fully automatic electric surface cooking units and oven may be combined in a range or separately located —the surface units “dropped” into an island or a counter.- The oven—two if you like—is set waist-high into the wall. The electric dishwasher takes pots

and pans as well as dishes, and washes everything at close to sterilizing temperatures. The refrigerator-freezer never needs defrosting, has storage space galore, keeps perishables storefresh for weeks—and frozen foods for months. Year-round climate comfort — air-conditioning and electric heating systems keep indoor temperatures at ideal, more healthful levels all year round. The house stays fresher and cleaner because windows never need to be opened. Three-way lighting plan—general illumination is ideal, but there also are special lights for work areas over sink, counters and cooking units in the kitchen, for example, and accent lighting to enhance decor. The Gold Medallion symbolizing these electrical features has other virtues as well. One of the most important is the assurance it gives buyers that a home is all it should be from an electrical point of view. This assurance can be passed on to future buyers, too, if at a later date a family wants to selL -
