Writers And Broadcasters Favor Attacks By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Tall and talented Indianapolis Attucks has been installed as a better than 2-to-l favorite for the 51st annual Indiana high school basketball championship. A cross-section poll conducted by United Press International of the state’s sportswriters and broadcasters also gave prominent backing to Kokomo, Indianapolis Manual, Muncie Central and unbeaten Madison. But the Flying ligers, shooting for a fourth state title when sectional tourney warfare opens Wednesday, were the top choice. Coach Bill Garrett's crew received 32 votes in the cross-section survey, Attucks, 19-2 for the season, was fifth in last week’s UPI coaches’ board ratings. Top-ranking Kokomo, 19-1 and the North Central Conference champs, received 14 votes. Manual, No. 2. and 19-2, got nine and Muncie’s 1960 tourney runners-up half a dozen backers. 5 Choose Madison Five experts tabbed Madison, which last Friday night concluded its second consecutive unbeaten regular season. Muncie, 18-2, was a prohibitive 7-to-l favorite last year, only to be cut down by East Chicago Washington in the title game, 7559. Other votes included some for East Chicago’s defending state i champs, Gary Roosevelt, Michigan City, Logansport. Bloomfield ’ and Indianapolis Cathedral. They were praising Attucks’ apparent tourrey invincibility all ' over the state, “The Tigers have everything—height, speed, depth, good shooting j and rebounding,” said Scott Alexander of the Columbus Republican "Kokomo and Muncie seem t-■> fold when the chips are down,"

commented Bill Sayger of the Rochester Sentinel. Tenny Says Attucks Ben Tenny of the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel picked the Attucks weeks ago. No reason to change now, he said. • . But there were lots of dissenters. "We’re gonna keep that thing in the Northwest for a couple of years,” wrote John Walsh of the Gary Post-Tribune, who tabbed Gary Roosevelt. "That defeat by Muncie Central put Kokomo in the right frame of mind," said Chuck Werle of the LaPorte Herald-Argus. “If Manual plays like it played down here, the Redskins have a great chance,” wrote Herb MacGregor of New Albany, after Manual’s 79-54 victory over the Bulldogs. Ron Wood of the Washington Times figures Bloomfield is about the toughest club in southern Indiana. PETE'S PICKS Continued from Section Two COMMODORES-BERNE—The Commodores were the only Adams county team Berne did not play during the season. The fine record made by the Bears and the mediocre season for the Commodores simply adds to: Our vote goes to the BEARS. —oOo— YELLOW JACKETS-GENEVA—The Yellow Jackets downed the Cardinals by 17 points early in the season. Both teams stand at 10-10 on the season. The Decatur victory and tougher schedule the Jackets play points to: Our vote goes to the YELLOW JACKETS. —oOo— MONMOUTH- BERNE — The Eagles gave the Bears a great battle in the finals of the county tourney before bowing by only four points. But the Bears came back right after the tourney to whip the Eagles by 21 ooints on the Monmouth court. Our vote goes to the BEARS. —oOo— YELLOW JACKETS-BERNE—The Bears overcame the Yellow Jackets by 10 points on the Berne floor early in the season. A fine season record, superior size of the Bears, point to another championship. Our vote goes to the BEARS. —oOo— PETE the PICKER has cast his lot. Regardless of the outcome, here's hopes for a fine tourney, the best of sportsmanship, and lots of tuck to all the Adams county teams. .
