(Editor’s Note) Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Dally Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published regularly.) 1. Q—l am 25 years old and have been a paraplegic and unable to work since my accident at the age of 12. My father had worked at a factory for over 30 years until he was stricken with a heart attack in February, 1960. Are we eligible for social security disability benefits when he becomes 50 years of age? A—Your father should file immediately at his local social security office for you, as a disabled child, your mother and himself as a disabled worker. If his disability meets the requirements of the social security law, benefits will be payable effective November 1960, regardless of your father’s age. The 1960 amendments removed the age requirements for disability benefits. 2. Q —l retired in 1958 from teaching school. School teachers were covered by social security here in Indiana, effective with the year 1955. When I retired I learrfed that at age 62 in 1960 I would need 19 quarters of coverage to be insured under social security. Did the 1960 amendments change this? A—Yes. Under the 1960 amendments to the social security law, you need less work to qualify for benefits. If you attain age 62 in 1960 regardless of the month you will need only 12 quarters of coverage. 3. Q —How long does a wife have to be married to a disabled beneficiary before she can be eligible as a social security wife? A—One year. This was changed with the 1960 amendments. 4. Q—l was granted a disability freeze by the social security administration in 1957. At the present time I am 38 years old. I read in the paper that the social security administration would get in touch with me by the end of October 1960 regarding my entitlement to social security benefits. When I moved I forgot to change my address and I still haven’t received a letter about my disability benefits. What should I do? A—You should get in touch with your nearest social security office as soon as possible. A letter was sent to your old address and probably returned. Disability benefits are payable effective November 1960 regardless of your age. 5. Q — My deceased brother worked under social security of over 10 years. After his death I filed for benefits for his surviving

three children as his wife passed away three years ago and he never remarried. Will the children's benefits be increased because of the new amendments? Each child now is receiving S7O a month. A—Yes. Effective January 1981, each child will be entitled to a full three-fourths of the deceased wage earner’s primary insurance amount. However, the family maximum payable to any family can not exceed $254. 6. Q—Can a disabled beneficiary who is recovering and starting to work on a new job still receive disability benefits? A—Yes. Under the new 1960 amendments, a beneficiary who goes to work despite severe handicaps can continue to be paid benefits for 12 months—whether they go to work under a vocational rehabilitation plan or on their own. 7. Q—l formerly received disability benefits until I returned to work a year ago. Now I have had a relapse and I am unable to work. If I file again for disability will I have to wait six months before my payments start? A—No. The 1960 amendments eliminate the waiting period if a worker became disabled again within 5 years after their benefits have stopped because of cessation of their disability.
