Something Is Needed — Fast The old adage about building a better mousetrap is pretty generally true, but it is possible to build too good a mousetrap, and end up hurting yourself. Take, for instance, the American farmer. Right away, some people will get mad. Their voices can almost be heard saying “some more about the poor farmer.” No one feels particularly sorry for the farmer as /An individual. But we may end up feeling sorry for everyone if something is not done, and done soon, about the agricultural problem. From 1957-1959, industrial efficiency went up 21 per cent, which is a tribute to American industry. In the same period of time, however, the efficiency of the American fanner went up more than 42 per cent—more than double that of industry. And still the farmer is not getting the return from his efforts that he should. It is easy to say just slow down on the efficiency of the fanner. It could also be disastrous. The time can be foreseen in the next 20 years when we will need every bit of agricultural efficiency we now possess, and even more. The farm problem is not a permanent one—population increases and city growth will see to that. But it nonetheless is a pressing problem. Before the great depression of the 30’s, there was a prolonged farm recession. If the present one goes too, long, it could mean the same thing. For agriculture is a much more important industry than some people think. There are 7.4 million farm workers, and another 10 million in industries directly related to farming. Investments in agriculture equal % of the value of the current assets of all the corporations in the United one of the largest customers. Agriculture uses more steel than the automobile industry. It contributes 3.5 billion dollars to the petroleum industry. And it produces 51 per cent of the raw materials for other industries. In 1929, the consumer spent 23 Vx per cent of his disposable income for food. In 1959, richer food purer food, and food that contributed more to the consumer’s health cost him only 20 per cent of his ... disposable income. All of this, and much more, adds up to an agricultural problem that is not the farmer’s problem, but-, America s problem. The first requirement is that the public realize it is a problem common to every citizen of this country, not just to a comparatively few people living in rural areas. Then, we must find the solutions.
