... In The Spring, Tra La The weather around the county for the past few days has given everybody Spring fever. The sap is rising (but decided to sit back down and finish an editorial) in spirit, if not in fact. The early type of Spring fever is not the type that makes one lazy, but the kind that makes one anxious for the green leaves and the balmy breezes. Along with thoughts of Spring come the thoughts of cleaning up around the house, both inside and out. With all of the modern paints available today, ft is easier to redecorate than it is to clean walls (at least that is what the ladies insist). Ail of the necessary materials and utensils for home decorating are available here in Decatur. There are also those who can give the needed information on both the use of the materials, and what kind and color to use. And then, after most homeowners and their mates have thoughtfully considered said information - and decided it is all wrong, the redecorating becomes a reality. Besides the fact that home and yard cleaning is a fine outlet for excess energy, it serves other purposes. It makes the man of the house appreciate his job more, for if it wasn’t for his job, he might be around the house all of the time, and have a fulltime occupation of trimming, mowing, painting and climbing. The real value of redecorating comes to the lady of the house. It undoubtedly gives a housewife a real boost of morale to walk into a newly painted, carpeted or papered room. And nobody, according to all the propaganda we hear, needs a morale boost more than the housewife. But, at least the weather is appreciated. As folks hurry around, though, they should remember to be a little careful—there are still some slick spots on the walk on the north side of the house.

Houston Snaps Long Bradley Winning Skein By United Press International Don’t tell the Bradley Braves you can strike oil in Houston, they’ve been struck by lightning twice down there. The University of Houston’s basketball squad provided the striking force Thursday night by knocking Bradley, rated No. 2 in the nation, from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 60-59 victory. The Cougars’, triumph also snapped Bradley’s two-season 18game winning streak as well as its 12-0 record this year. It was on the same Houston Coliseum court a year ago that the Cougars upended Bradley before the Braves went on their winning streak which included the National Invitational Tournament title. Solace for Bradley Some solace for Bradley, shooting for the Missouri Valey Conference title after finishing second for the last four years, may be that Houston has. dropped from the league this "season, thereby keeping the Braves’ 4-0 conference mark intact.- Jim Lemmon’s free throw with 35 seconds left was the margin of victory after Houston stormed back from a 10point halftime deficit. Neither team scored a field goal in the last 5M< minutes with the score tied, 59-all, as Houston went into a freeze. NCAA Grid Group Studies [Rules Changes * PITTSBURGH (UPl)—The National Collegiate Athletic Association, which mixed mercy with discipline during Its 55th annual convention here, turned today towards legislation and certification. The 18-member council remained here Thursday to put the finishing touches on a certification system which it resurrected from a system in effect five years ago. The Football Rules Committee ' meets in Miami, Fla. today to consider 10 rule changes proposed by American Football Coaches Association during its threeday meetings here. Jack Curtice of Stanford, new AFCA president, and his predecessor, Penn State Coach Charles (Rip) Engle already in Miami laying the groundwork. New Rules Certification — The council will spend special certification forms with its new rules to member schools next month. The schools must return to the council certificates showing their staffs have studied the new rules and would comply. A similar system was implemented by the council in 1955 but was not required since. In its final session Thursday the NCAA council asked the ice hockey committee to inquire into reports that Canadian pro leagues are subsidizing U.S. college hockey players. , NCAA Executive Director Wal- • ter Byers said that American r players allied with Canadian , teams risk eligibility in their na- . five land. He said the -committee also would investigate the number ) of Canadian players on U.S. colr lege hockey teams and report its , findings to the council to deter- ' mine if any action should be tak- ’ en. r I Request Free Substitution t Only two instances have been uncovered in the past five years, according to Byers, and both student athletes had been ruled ineligible. One was enrolled at Denver and the other at North Dakota. 1 A request for free substitution is the major change sought in football rules. Also running high lin new rule requests are mandajtory numbering for players acr; cording to position, number of officials, elimination of a touchback for downing a punt inside the opponents’ 10-yard line and permitting coaching from the sidelines. Retiring NCAA President H. Jr Dorricott of Western State College <Colo.) was elected to the committee and the Rev. Wildred H. , Crowley of Santa Clara was ' named secretary - treasurer. All other members of the executive i committee were re-elected. They " j were Jefferson Colman, University of Alabama; Wilbur C. Jones, UCLA; Richard C. Larkins, Ohio State; Arthur C. Lonberg. All-Star Pro Bowl Game Next Sunday LOS ANGELES (UPD—Coach Vince Lombardi today named quarterback Johnny Unitas and right halfback Lennie Moore of the Baltimore Colts among his starter? for the West All-Star Pro Bowl team against the East Sunday at the Coliseum. Lombardi, in naming his probable offensive lineup, held in reserve his two aces from the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Bart Starr and right halfback Paul Hornung, the National Football League’s all-time scoring leader. Lombardi was apparently set on the strategy of letting teammates Unitas and his favorite passing target, Moore, work together, at least for a while. Named with Unites and Moore in the backfield were Jon Arnett of the Los Angeles Rams at left half and Jim Taylor of the Packers at fullback. Coach Buck Shaw of the East squad named his Philadelphia Eagle quarterback Norm Van Brocklin as a starter in a backfield with John Crow of the St. Louis Cardinals and Tommy McDonald of the Elagles at halfbacks and Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns at fullback.
