HaviTYou Heard The Latest? th* °J € Of i W ® utst&nd w features of a small city is ’ h s h * l city Ossips. While they are no more prevalent town than in a metropolis, they I'M more credit fn a smaller community because they cover the whole town, wherteas those of the big cities ;* Have to limit themselves to one suburban area. The saddest part about gossips is that most of what to say is not true. And if what they were saying was true, the only reason they pass it on is because is many cases they are just jealous that it happened to someone else instead of themselves. The latest qlasa of gossips are the ones that spread the rumors through business offices. Contrary to the popular opinion that most gossips are female, this latest class, a$ _well as any other type, are as often male as femafe. They can figure every rehson why someone should not get an ad\ ancement or a raise, but know of no good reason why a particular person should get ahead. But whether they are business or social gossips they still thrive on the trials and troubles of other people. In a Christian nation, with a high educational average, it remains a mystery why there are some people who would rather talk about the trouble* of others instead of seeking a happier subject. The ability of man th converse with man is supposed to be one of the features that sets the homo : hapien above the animal world. Along with the abil- * ity to converse, however, goes the ability to think and reason. These are the qualities that really set man above animal, not merely the fact that he can talk. How far above the animal kingdom man may be, can be reflected in what he says. For regardless of how lofty a persons thoughts.may be, he is judged by what comes out of the mouth. One of the bits of modern post-card philosophy has put it very well: "Be sure the brain is in gear before putting mouth in motion.”
