It'« Later Than Yau Think It is sincerely hoped that those people who wail over government controls will take a long look at their next fire insurance bill As most of us know, the rates in Decatur have gone up. They have gone up to the tune of about $25,000 per year in this city, and that is $25,000 that the city of Decatur will never see again. They went up justifiably. The fire protection that brings lower rates is not present. What was done cannot be argued. How it was done, can be. In April of this year, the Indiana Rating Bureau made some formal recommendations to the Mayor and the city council for improvements to the city’s fire protection. In October the same bureau was in town doing the re-rating. The Indiana Rating Bureau is not a government agency. It is at least partially supported by the insurance companies. They are well aware that city governments have to have some time to make the expensive changes they recommend. Changes that in Decatur are now being undertaken. Yet they gave this city just six months to make the changes. Perhaps the city heard rumblings of needed changes earlier, but until the rating bureau made its official recommendations, there was only general knowledge of what areas needed the improvements, no specifics. This is not intended to be a condemnation of the rating bureau. This service is a needed service, needed by both the insurance companies and the cities involved. They do a good and fair job of setting the rates. But, as the waiters at the wall of each government control bemoan “what will it lead to?”, what could it lead to when a city is not given enough time to make needed adjustments before it is slapped with a $25,000 increase by a business-subsidized organization ?
