Children’s Fund, under UNICEF. As the children collected the money for this during the Halloween season they should find this very interesting. The planning of the Christmas program is underway and all parents are urged to have their children present each Sunday as we prepare for this special day remembering the birth of Christ. THOUGHT FOR TODAY “Blessed Are They—” Matt. 5: 1-10 What would it take to make you happy? Money? Worldly pleasures? Idleness? People have not been too successful trying to find happiness in the conventional ways. We have been seeking it out there; it can only be found in here. You can’t force it. A little fellow in the animal tent at the circus was afraid. His mother kept slapping and shaking him, saying “enjoy yourself, I brought you here to enjoy yourself.” The word “Blessed” can be translated “happy” but it is more. It is happiness with a religious content. It is the opening theme of the greatest sermon by- the greatest preacher. Now you are in for a surprise. “Blessed are they—” but the things which follow are not what you would expect—the poor in spirit, mouners, the meek. Those are almost the opposite of what most people today would list. The Beatitudes are the character qualities Jesus wanted in his followers. They indicate the kind of people Jesus could use in establishing and building the Kingdom of God on earth. Jesus could work with those who know their need, the sympathetic, the gentle, those eager for right, the merciful, the pure, peacemakers, the persecuted. “Thanksgiving is the most Christian of holidays,” says Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, “because Its only meaning is a religious oQC. namely, that the fruits of the ’ 'good earth come to us from God ’ who made the world and gives ’ harvest to those who plow and ' plant and harrow.” Thanksgiving is a holiday that commemorates no hero, and celebrates no battlefield. No lobby is behind ft—no group or sect or party. It doesn’t ; even fall on the same date twice. Yet Christmas cannot dim ft nor the Fourth of July steal its glory. Christians should celebrate the Thanksgiving festival by sharing and by worship of God, the giver of all good things. WHY NOT ACCEPT THE INVITATION AND COME TO CHURCH NEXT SUNDAY? Saturday 9 & 10 a.m.—Catechism classes wiU meet. A HAPPY HOME Parents would do weU to remind their children that Thanksgiving should be a time for them to say “thank you” personally or in letters to the many people who have shown them kindness and understanding through the year, to teachers, relatives who are in distant places, to neighbors, tradespeople, friends. So many of our blessings are soon forgotten, and Thanksgiving should be a time for remembering and showing gratitude toward all those who make life richer, happier, mote meaningful and give us the sympathetic understanding, the affection, the kindness without which life would be difficult, drab and lonely. DO YOU KNOW ANSWERED 1. “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”—ll Cor. 9:15. 2. An old form of the past tense of the verb “think”. 3. That is where Thanksgiving flows ever the soul. All 1 1 that we see is full of blessing i > and meaning. The world is made • for the soul as well as the body. • Sounds flow over into music and song, colors flow over into rain- . bows, landscapes and sunsets, earth flows over into blossoms and trees, skies flow over into - light, sun, moon and stars, and • all flow over into the human soul with divine meaning and moral i elevation and as a result, the i spirit of Thanksgiving, an event i with God at the center. The mys- ■ tical aspect of life is closer to reality than we sometimes are willing to acknowledge, and in its acceptance, we shall find the deeper meanings of life. I J BCAMuDXRj r ■HHH Just in case you wonder what you have to be thankful for, think of the little boy condemned at an early age to wear glasses. In an essay entitled, “What I Am Thankful For.” he wrote that he was thankful for the glasses since they i kept other boys from fighting with , him, and the little girls from I kissing him! r Our Preacher i jl » I " 'ln sal i Thankfulness is a completion of character without which we miss life’s central melody. The hardest sin to excuse is ingratitude, and 4 it comes from thoughtlessness. A i > thinking people is a thanking people. Many personal woes would ! be eliminated if more time were spent on thinking of our blessings and expressing gratitude to God I and to the many who contribute • to our happiness.
