Precious Rainfall General In Stale By United Press International Indiana soil soaked up some beneficial moisture today that will go a long way toward getting the earth in the right condition before the winter freeze sets in. Rainfall reports for the 24-tiour period ending at 7 a.m. today included more than an inch in the White River valley, nearly an inch at other points. Newberry’s 1.40 inches led the parade of precipitation totals. Others included Elliston 1.33, Edwardsport 1.25. Petersburg 1.21, Anderson .86, Terre Haute .97, Shoals .97, Rochester .91, Spencer .92, Evansville .88, Noblesville .88, Winchester .86, Indianapolis .81, Elwood .81, Warsaw .70, Marion .69, South Bend .65, Columbia City 62, Rushville .60, West Baden .59, Franklin .58, Portland .56, Bluffi ton .53, Seymour .52, Lafayette .51, Scottsburg .43 and Fort Wayne .42. Intermittent rain, sometimes heavy, pattered down on the entire state most of Tuesday and wet down soil which had received precious little moisture during the late summer land autumn. Once 'the showers were out of the way, forecasters indicated they would be sparse the next-five days. Precipitation through next Monday will total less than onetenth of an inch north and onetenth to three-tenths of an inch central and south. In the north, the showers were due Friday .Os Saturday. In central and south, the showers may fall Saturday j and Monday. Meanwhile, temperatures remained mild but were expected to cool off to near normal levels. Highs Tuesday ranged from 62 at Lafayette to 72 at Evansville and 75 at Louisville. Overnight lows ranged from 47 at Lafayette to 55 at Evansville and 56 at Louisville. Highs today will range from around 50 to the lower 60s, lows tonight from around 30 to near 40, and highs Thursday from near 50 to the low 50s. The five-day outlook indicated temperatures north will average near normal highs of 41 to 46 and near normal lows of 26 to 31, with only minor day-to-day changes. For the central and south, the outlook was for averages 2 to 5 degrees above normal highs of 48 to 55 and normal lows of 31 to 39. Employment To Reach 70 Million In 1961 CHICAGO (tIPP — Nationwide employment will reach a record high of 76 million persons in 1961, employment agency officials have predicted. The board of directors of the National Employment Board said during the group’s meeting here Tuesday the “inevitable” increase was indicted by a 25 per qent jump in job orders in recent days. The U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics last month reported 67.49 million persons employed in the United States. The nation's, peak was 68.68 million in July.
