A HAPPY HOME The first essential for effective family worship is to create a family of at-homeness with God. When prayer becomes a part of the normal every-day life of the family, each member should feel an increasing awareness of God and His will for them in their everyday living. Children should be taught to think of God as a wonderful friend who quickens the mind, inspires loyalty, and draws out the best in everyone. If a family is to have a sense of athomeness with God, God will need . to be more important than any- , thing else in the home. Many parents need to rtcognize that they have failed to put God first in their lives and in the management of the home. God must be made the most important part of the home life and not be relegated to a position second to the favorite television program, stamp collections, grades at school, golf scores, social activities. He must really be made first. Wake Up, America! In 1787, Edward Gibbon, the great English historian, completed his notable work. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Here is the way he accounted for the fall of the great Empire: 1. The rapid increase of divorce; the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the base of human society. 2. Higher and higher taxes, and the spending of public monies for free bread and circuses for the benefit of the populace, 3. The mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming every year more exciting and more and more brutal. 4. The building of gigantic armaments when the real enemy was within, in the decadence of the people. 5. The decay of religion—faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life and becoming impotent to warn and guide the people. 1 Wife: “Jim, I found a letter in this coat pocket today; I gave t it to you four weeks ago to mail . for me.” Husband: “Yes, dear. I took the coat off that day so you could sew a button on for me; I’m still waiting for the button.” A school teacher Mice asked her pupils, “What is in our world today that wasn’t here fifty years ago?” Imagine her surprise, when Johnny piped up, “Me.” DO YOU KNOW ANSWERED 1. Lydia of Thyatira, who lived at Philippi. 2. Eighteen months. 3. Tarsus. 4. The Pharisees. 5. His nephew—Acts 23:16.
