Nixon's Brother Denies Accusation LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Donald Nixon denied Sunday night that his brother, Vice President Richard M. Waters, who acted for financier Howard Hughes. He denied ever having me* Hughes or ever attempting to get special government favors for Hughes. “I have never asked my brother A? do anything for me or anyone Yise in the government,” Nixon said. “And if I did ask I knew he would refuse.” Pearson had charged in his Washington Merry-Go-Round column that matters involving Hughes’ companies pending before the federal government received better treatment after the loan. At least one agency has publicly denied the accusation. Pearson said in answer to Nixon's statement that “according to the records of the Los Angeles Corporations Commission (Richard M. Nixon) was an applicant for stocks purchased in his brother’s company.” “The Howard Hughes financial empire, including Hughes Aircraft, TWA and Hughes Tool had business with the U.S. government at every turn from mail contracts, airplane contracts to air routes,” Pearson said. Donald Nixon said the whole transaction had been concluded two years ago. Pearson claimed the property used to secure the $205,000 loan was worth only $60,000 (a claim Pearson repeated after Nixon’s statement w,as released), but Nixon said the property actually was worth more than the loan.

Preachers Ignore Political Issue

United Press International Spot checks by UPI indicated that a substantial majority of the nation’s 'Protestant ministers conducted their usual worship services on Reformation Sunday and made no reference to the religious issue in the presidential campaign. Some Protestant clergymen did warn from the pulpit against election of a Roman Catholic as president. Others preached sermons against bigotry. But according to the UPI survey, most of the ministers ignored the political issue. The last Sunday in October .traditionally is observed by some Protestant bodies, notably Lutherans, as ithe anniversary of the occasion on which Martin Luther nailed his famous “95 theses” on the door of a church at Wittenberg, Germany. Luther's action was the spark which ignited the Protestant Reformation. Some fundamentalist Protestant groups had urged ministers to use this year's observance as an occasion for telling their congregations that religious freedom would be jeopardized if the Roman Catholic church achieved political power in America. ( Sponsors of the idea denied that it was intended as an eleventhhour blow at the candidacy of Sen. John F. Kennedy, a Catholic. But that was the interpretation placed on it by the leaders of several major Protestant denominations, who urged .their churches to have no pant in turning Reformation Sunday into a “political rally.” The controversy that broke out in advance of the observance ap-
