A Leader The great German poet-philospher Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, in his “Conversations With Eckerman,” made the following statement: “If I were a prince, I would never place in the highest offices, people that have gradually risen by mere birth and seniority, who in their old age move on liesurely in their accustomed track; for in this way, little talent is brought to light. I would have young men; but they must have capabilities—clearness, energy, the best will, and the noblest character.” While some Americans might disagree, and it is certainly their right, this description could well have been written of John F. Kennedy. The young Senator has clearness. He has refused to wave the flag, or attempt to make people feel sorry for him in the Campaign. He speaks on the issues, and he speaks on their Influence on the country and the world. In the realm of energy, no other candidate has put on such an energetic or sustained campaign as Kennedy. There was little doubt, after the 1956 convention, that John Kennedy was destined to be a leader of the Democratic party. Through his alert intelligence and irrepressible energies, he has become just that. He has the best will for the future of the United States. He is not dealing with the past, but is facing to the challenges and threats of the future with an enthusiastic and optimistic outlook. Despite suggestions to the contrary, he has not criticized the United States as a nation, but rather the leadership, or lack of same, that put this nation in its present position. Two of the clearest examples of a noble character are the Senator’s concern and sacrifice for his crew during some very trying moments during the second world war, and his respectful refusal to be dominated by a strong-willed father. While these features are not peculiar to the Senator alone, they are his, and denote his character. The United States needs and deserves a leader of the people, not the head of a board of directors. John F. Kennedy is a leader.
