Lopat Released As Coach By Yankees NEW YORK (UPD—Ed Lopat, released as coach of the New York Yankees, today made the Detroit Tigers’ managerial vacancy his No. 1 job-hunting objective. Lopat. a key pitcher in the Yankees’ five consecutive world championships from 1949 through 1953, was released Friday in a move that confirmed new manager Ralph Houk's intention of running the pitching staff himself. The 42-year-oki Lopat, who once also was considered a possible successor to Casey Stengel, said he was “a little surprised” at his dismissal, but expressed no bitterness toward Houk or the Yankees. “I enjoyed my years as a player and coach with the Yankees," he said at his home in Westwood, N.J. "There are no hard feelings. In baseball you’ve got to expect these things to happen.” Lopat said he had several “feelers” from other major league clubs last year before he rejoined the Yankees as pitching coacn. He said he definitely was interested in the job of managing the Tigers, “if they want me.” Joe Gordon resigned the Detroit job at the close of the 1960 season. “I think I’m qualified 1o take over as manager or coach of any
