MRS. DICK MANSFIELD HOSTESS TO CIRCLE Mrs. Dick Mansfield, Jr., was hostess to sixteen members of the Ruth Circle of the First Presbyterian church and one visitor, Mrs. Scott Martindill, Wednesday. Mrs. Martha Heller, vice chairmari, presided and opened the meeting with prayer. Miss Bertha Heller presented the Bible study on a review of the Psalms and reviewed several familiar verses. She read an excerpt from Francis A. Thompson’s poem, "The Hound of Heaven,’’ emphasizing the psalmist's assertion that it is impossible to flee from God. Mrs. Martindill gave a review of the book "One World, One Mission,” written by a theology professor. Dr. W. R. Hogg. The review included the future of the Christian mission in the world today. Mrs. David Langston made a request that 1960 fair pledges be paid and illustrated her request with a thermometer showing the current amount of pledges collected. Announcements were made concerning the fall rummage sale which will be held October 21 and 22 and the Women’s Association meeting October 26. Any member wishing to change from an afternoon to an evening circle was asked to notify the executive committee before Tuesday, October 18. In addition to the regular collections a collection was taken to provide medical kits for world community day November 4. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. Robert Frisinger and Mrs. Gene Ziner, served a dessert course to conclude the meeting. DECATUR VALPO GUILD MEETS The Decatur Circuit chapter of the Valparaiso University Guild held its opening meeting at St. John, Bingen, Tuesday. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Erwin Franke. Mrs. Paul Wolfe then read inspirational excerpts from Dr. O. P. Kretzmann’s book, ‘‘Valparaiso’s First Century." The roll call was answered by 55 members, and 12 guests were also present. Mrs. Willard Fawbush, project chairman, announced that the Guild would have a rummage sale in Decatur October 28 and 29. The "traveling baskets” will also be started soon among the Guild members. Franke and Mrs. Louis Jacobs attended the national convention at Valparaiso several weeks ago and both gave interesting highlights on the proceedings. Henry Husmann, interior decorator from Decatur, was the speaker for the evening. A delicious lunch was served by the Guild members from St. John’s Lutheran church, Bingen. WELCOME WAGON CLUB ELECTS OFFICERS The Decatur Welcome Wagon club met recently at the home of Mrs. Earl Cass on Limberlost Trail. The meeting opened with the club prayer and song following the roll call which was answered by "A Country I would like to visit.” The treasurer's report was given and six new members were welcomed into the club. Officers were elected with the following results: Mrs. Joan Erhart, president; Mrs. Donna Gage, vice president; Mrs. Edith Kneuss, secretary; and Mrs I Sharon Grimm, treasurer. Games were enjoyed by the group and prizes were awarded to Mrs. Beverly Trout, Mrs. Larry Young, Mrs. Pat Hoopingarner and Mrs. Thomas King. Mrs. Marie Messich won the door prize. The hostess and co-hostess, Mrs. Dan Tyndall, served lovely refreshments. The next meeting will be -held November 14. CONGREGATION GIVES PARTY FOR PASTOR The congregation of the Pleasant Mills Baptist church motored to Huntington Friday evening for a surprise birthday party for their minister, the Rev. A. A. Van Wormer.

After lunch the group was entertained with piano playing and the singing of many songs. The Rev. Wormer received many lovely gifts and a good time was had by all. W. C. T. U. STATE CONVENTION NEXT WEEK The Kirkland W. C. T. U. met Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Floyd Stonebumer with a birthday dinner in her honor. Following the dinner the meeting was opened by the leader, Mrs. Joe Baumgardner, with the group singing of “I Know Whom I Believed.” Everyone then joined in the salute to the American flag and a pledge to the Christian flag and temperance flag. Mrs. Alicia Carper gave the devotions and led in prayer, after which Mrs. Dortha Shady presided over the business meeting. Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the W. C. T. U. state convention will be held in Huntington. It was decided to hold a birthday supper at the Antioch parish house November 10 in keeping with the four seasons of the year. Mrs. Blanch Henschen gave the lesson on the nature of alcohol and Mrs. Pearl Lach closed with prayer. PRISCILLA CIRCLE MEETS WITH MRS. CHARLES KENT The Priscilla Circle of the Trinity Evangelical United Brethren church met at the home of Mrs. Charles Kent recently. The leader, Mrs. Clifford Hoverman, used “By Love United” as her topic, telling of the founders and history of the united churches. The business meeting was conducted by Mrs. David Wynn. The November meeting is to be held at the home of Mrs. Wm. Strahm. Mrs. Sephus Jackson will be the leader. The Adams County Home Demonstration chorus will meet at the Farm Bureau Building in Monroe Monday at 7:30 p.m. All members are asked to be present. The Decatur Garden club will meet with Mrs. Amos Ketchum Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Don Lutes will give a lesson on Japanese flower arrangements. Each member is asked to bring a novelty container of flowers. The Wesleyan Service Guild of the First Methodist church will hold its meeting Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the church chapel. Miss Bernice Nelson and Mrs. Katharyn Nelson are worship and program leaders. The hostesses will be Mrs. Catherine Beavers, Mrs. Donna Rawley and Mrs. Amanda Steury. The St. Anne study club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday with Mrs. Anselm Hackman. The Preble Township Farm Bureau will meet Thursday at 8 o’clock at the Friedheim Lutheran school. Forest Tucker of the Adams county Co-op will be the speaker. The DYB class of the Trinity Evangelical United Brethren church will hold a regular class meeting Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at the church. VThe Presbyterian Mariner’s club will have a hayride Sunday evening starting from the church at 7:30 p.m. Those unable to go will meet those who do go at the church at 9 o’clock. The Lincoln schooF PTA will hold their first meeting at the Lincoln auditorium Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. This will be a get acquainted meeting. Hospital Admitted Miss Judith Brooks, Berne. Minor Accident In City Lost Evening A car and a truck were involved in a minor accident at 8:45 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of North Second street A truck driven by Donald Frederick Beerman, 40, Fort Wayne, backed into a car driven by Mildred Evelyn Childs, 34, 1019 Central Ave. Approximately $l5O damage was done to the car, while the truck was not damaged.

Miss Barbara Jeanne Wolfe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wolfe of Pleasant Mills, and Rudolf Rickenbach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Rickenbach of Seuach, Switzerland, were united in marriage in a civil marriage at the town hall in Salenstein, Switzerland, and in a religious ceremony in a chapel near that town Sunday, October 9 at 10 a.m. The bride chose a ballerina length gown of imported lace and nylon tulle over crystal white taffeta. The lace bodice was fashioned with a scalloped sabrina neckline, sprinkled with irridescent sequins and seed pearls and long lace sleeves. The very bouffant skirt of tulle featured vertical panels of scalloped lace over a ruffled petticoat. Her veil' of imported illusion was caught to a LOCALS Mr. and Mrs. Lohnas Mclntosh and Miss Janet Miller will attend the homecoming activities at Manchester College Saturday. Miss Helen Barkley, of Monroe street, is slowly improving from a virus throat infection at her home. Mrs. itatharyne Nelson and son Jim, and Mrs. Sarah Dixson spent Wednesday in Bloomington visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nelson and sons. James D. Nelson, son of Mrs. Katharyne Nelson, who is serving with the U. S. Navy, will leave Wednesday for Norfolk, Va.. after spending a 15-day leave in Decatur. He was formerly stationed at Green Cove Springs, Fla. While home Nelson and his mother visited with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nelson and sons of Bloomington. Mrs. Katharyne Nelson has received the address of her son, Pat, who has enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and is in basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. To Air Documentary On Mental Illness INDIANAPOLIS — Radio station WOWO in Fort Wayne, will present a documentary on mental illness in Indiana Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m. The thirty minute program will consist of interviews with gubernatorial candidates, Matthew Welsh and Crawford Parker. Questions pertaining to the facilities in mental hospitals and the care of mentally ill and retarded in Indiana will be directed to the candidates. An interview recorded during the annual conference of the Indiana association for mental health will also be included in the program.

The bride is employed as a guidance counselor at the Redford Union high school in Detroit, Mich. Her husband is on the staff of the Cosmophone Language school for the region of Bern, Switzerland. The couple will be at home at "Mohn-House” Apt. 3, Brungasse 6, Bern, Switzerland, after Octatober 16. Heart Attack Fatal To Walter Liechty Walter Liechty, 74, lifelong resident of Monroe township, died about 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the home of a son, Harry Liechty, northwest of Berne, following a heart attack. Mr. Liechty was a member of the First Mennonite church at Berne. Surviving in addition to the son are another son, Christian J. Liechty of Berne; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond Sprunger of Berne, Mrs. William Dieffenbach, of Bloomfield, la., and Mrs. Christ Bieberstine of Berne route 1; 11 grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Noah M. Lehman and Mrs. Enos W. Lehman of Berne, and Mrs. Levi Lehman of Berne route 1. Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Sunday in the First Mennonite church, the Rev. Gordon J. Neuenschwander officiating. Burial will be in the MRE cemetery. Friends may call at the Yager funeral home after 7:30 p. m. today. Youth Crushed To Death By Tractor SALEM, Ind. (UPD—Sidney R. Blankenship, 18, route 2. Pekin, home on emergency leave from the Army, was crushed to death Thursday when a tractor he was driving broke a wheel and overturned. The accident occurred on private property just off Indiana 60 near here. Blankenship was on leave from his California Army base because of illness in his family. Every bill, resolution or order passed by the Arkansas Legislature must be approved or disapproved by the governor — except on the question of adjournment. Government payments to Arkansas farmers in 1959 were about sl2 million, compared to s3l million in 1958.

B. church, 7 p.m. Hurricane Force Winds Lash Texas By United Press International Hurricane force winds, hail and torrential rains lashed parts of Texas Thursday night. Nearly three inches of rain accompanied by 60 mile an hour winds hit Dallas. Lightning touched off several house fires and knocked a Dallas television station off the air for several hours. The fire department used boats to rescue several persons marooned by flash floods in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas. Winds up to 86 miles an hour battered Waco, knocking out lights downtown but causing little other damage. The Highway Patrol said a 40foot house trailer was destroyed and 10 cotton trailers and a grocery were damaged at West, Tex., about 25 miles north of Waco. Hail struck Irving, Abilene, Seymour, Lake Kemp and Hamilton in north and northwest Texas. Brownwood police said a small tornado damaged buildings at the city airport. Elsewhere around the country, nearly two inches of rain fell at Sedalia, Mo., as heavy storms raked much of the central United States. Some snow fell in the Rockies. Scattered showers were forecast over parts of the Plains, the Great Lakes and the Gulf Coast today, with snow expected in the northern and central Rockies. Reports Vandalism Done At Homestead Mrs. Grover Levy, Homestead No. 15, reported to the city police this morning that sometime last night a globe was removed from the light at the south entrance to the Homestead and broken in the street. She also reported that someone had gone through the whole area and opened all the mail boxes and practically twisted off the mail box at the Marion Heare residence. No. 5. The city police are investigating the incident, which involves a federal offense of damaging mail boxes. Eacn evening over 4.50 C copies are printed of the Decatur uaux Democrat.

Mrs. Mollie Stanford Dies At Fort Wayne Mrs. Mollie K. Stanford. 80. a native of Decatur, died Thursday at Fort Wayne, where she had resided for the past 60 years. She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic church. Surviving are a brother, David Burger of Jackson, Mich.; a grand-. daughter, Mrs. Eugene Nicole of Fort Wayne, and five great-grand-children. Services will be held at 9:30 am. Saturday at the D O. McComb & Sons funeral home and at 10 a.m. at Queen of Angels church. I;:;-. • : . ? $200,000 Damages In Warehouse Fire BREMEN, Ind. <UPI) - A fire ! at the Bornemann Outlet Factory > warehouse caused an estimated • $200,000 damages in completely-’ destroying the building and most of its contents, manager Richard Dull said late Thursday night. Authorities said the fire apparently started from a spark from a welder's torch which dropped into a pile of foam rubber. Three welders were working on a smoke stack on the roof of the warehouse when the blaze started.
