These huge pieces of polar glaciers are a dangerous obstacle for any shipping in their area. Because the majority of their bulk is hidden under the water, it is impossible for a captain to know how close he might be to ramming his boat on a submerged section. It is worthwhile to ponder whether modern society might not be likened to a glacier exuding countless icebergs in the form of people. By society, it is not necessarily meant those affairs dealing strictly with social life. But our life as a whole, social, business, religious and personal, are the components of our total society. And how many icebergs do you know floating around the sea of life? How many people are there that only expose one-tenth of themselves, keeping the other nine-tenths submerged below the surface of their lives? Again, that old glacier society seems to demand that we hide our real selves. We are supposed to smile and be nice and agree with everyone. Don’t argue, or take offense to someone else’s remark, because they might not think you are nice. What difference it would make if someone else does not think you are nice has yet to be explained. Another reason one should not disagree is because people will think you are more capable. Ho'fv they can think anyone is capable who never states an opinion also has to be explained. It seems the iceberg bit has even gotten into political debates. The other side isn’t bad, and certainly each party respects the other's opinions, at least when they appear on television together. Naturally, no one should try to force their opinion onto someone else, nor should a person go out of their way to be disagreeable, just to be an individual. Neither should one decide that since society deems it prudent to be a “know-nothing,” that is the thing to do. An iceberg is nine-tenths under the surface. Its only contribution to the sea is that it lowers the temperature somewhat, and dilutes it a little. By doing both, it becomes non-existant. The same thing is true of society’s icebergs. (Editor’s Note) Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do. don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find vour answer in this column, which is published reguirlyJ Q— My husband is receiving social security benefits. If I file now as a wife, will I receive retroactive payments to August, 1959, when I was 64 years old? I also earn about S3OO a year. Will this be included in the SI2OO my husband is allowed to make? A—ls you wish you may receive retroactive payments for as many as 12 months back from the time you file your application. However, you cannot be paid as a wife for any month before your husband began receiving benefits. As for the second part of your question, your earnings would be considered separate from your husband’s and you may earn up to SI2OO a year yourself and still receive all your social security checks. Q —For four years I had domestic help. She recently left my employment and apparently applied for social security benefits. When she was working for me I did not deduct any social security tax from her pay and report it to social security. I was recently informed that I would have to pay all the tax on these wages, both my part and the employee’s part. Is this right? A—Yes, it is. The law places with the employer the responsibility of collecting and reporting the taxes. If you fail to do this while the person is still employed, then the liability for all the tax lies with you. Q —What amount does a disabled man draw from social security? Does the amount he draws before age 65 lower his benefits 65? A—A disabled person whose claim is approved draws the same amount as if he were age 65. The amount he draws before age 65 has no affect on his retirement benefit at age 65. Q —My husband is receiving $l2O per month and I receive ssl as his wife. If he would pass away, how much will me benefit be? A—A widow receives monthly benefits equal to % of her husband’s benefit. Therefore, your monthly payments would be $76.50. Q —l have a woman who comes to the house one day a week to help with housecleaning. I pay her $4 per week. Do I have to report her wages for social security purposes? A—Yes. By paying her $4 per week, you will pay her over SSO in a calendar quarter. Therefore, her wages are subject to social security tax. I Q —l am 65 years old and have filed for my social security. My earnings in 1957 were low and these earnings were used in figuring the amount I draw. I am a self employed barber and if I have a good income in 1960, can I increase my check? A—lt is possible to increase the amount of your social security benefit through additional earnings. After the close of the year, recontact your district office. Also notify them immediately if you expect your earnings to be more than $1,200 this year. Back in Style NEW YORK (UPI) — That relic of another era — the home coffee grinder — is back in style again, but not as a planter or lamp. It’s being used to grind coffee. If you own one, remember that it should be scrubbed out with hot soap or detergent suds and rinsed before re-filling with coffee beans. Coffee oils grow rancid rapidly and can spoil the fresh taste of just-ground coffee. The average summer humidity i rate in Tucson, Ariz., is only 30 per cent. ■
