strange trend has developed In Indiana with respect to the Republican and Democratic national tickets: The growing popularity of both vice - presidential bidders, overshadowing the White House nominees to some extent. Sen. John F. Kennedy, the Democratic presidential choice, toured Indiana today following his big meeting in Indianapolis Tuesday night. Vice-President Richard M. Nixon, Kennedy’s GOP counterpart, made a successful ap- \ pearance in Evansville Saturday
night. Although both major candidates were greeted enthusiastically by many thousands, a number of Hoosier politicos expressed the opinion that Henry Cabot Lodge and Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson, who also have toured Hoosierdorn recently. have really excited Indianians. Lodge was comparatively unknown politically in this state until his appearances in the heart of Democratic territory—St. Jo-

seph and Lake Counties —two weeks ago. Television Image Most voters knew him favorably through his television image in which he “stood up to the Russians" during United Nations debate. It was a cold image, perhaps. However, since Lodge and his attractive, tactful wife, Emily, made their Hoosier debut, his vote appeal has grown noticeably, ac-. cording to the politicos.
In news conferences and especially at a catch-as-catch-can questioning period before about 2,500 persons on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, a Kennedy stronghold, Lodge became a human being to Hoosiers because he displayed warmth, wit end a pleasant nature, it was said. Johnson, always a favorite of Indiana Democrats, of whom many thousands liked him for President, likewise elevated his I Hoosier stature when he addresed . audience last Wednesday
in Evansville, Indianapolis, Wabash, Fort Wayn and Columbia City. The Democratic Senate leader delivers the salty, political type of speech familiar to Hoosiers. It is a bit earthy and replete with jokes with a rural tang. It is reminiscent of the late Sen. James Ell Watson, who might have stayed in the U.S. Senate until the day he died, had it not been for the depression and the Roosevelt landslide. \

Johnson Appealing More than 2,000 persons heard Johnson in Columbia City, nearly half the population of that community, of which former Gov. Ralph F. Gates, GOP national committeeman, is a leading citizen. Johnson spoke for one hour and 15 minutes, a long time for any modern political discourse, but the writer noted that the aduience was attentive and greatly amused all the time. He had the timing of a Jack Benny and the Hoosier touch. It was his best speech in 20 years, according to a Texas politicial writer who has “cover- ««• . I
