Tall In The Saddle Take a goodly portion of Andy Griffith’s drawl and humor, mix with equal amounts of Adlai Stevenson’s intellect, add three or four healthy helpings of Will Rogers at his best and pour it all into a personality as big as his native state, and you come up with a reasonable facsimile of Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. And you don’t get it in mild doses. The gentleman from Texas left no doubt in anyone’s mind Wednesday evening that he was: a Democrat; for Jack Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson; not the least bit impressed by Richard M. Nixon; ready to help lead this country to bigger and better things in the next four years. To those who have never heard Senator Johnson at any length, he is as humorous as he is dedicated and sincere. Some of his quips at Columbia City were real gems. In reference to the Vice-President’s infected knee: he expressed regret over the infection, and concern over its reoccurence. Johnson added that if there was anything this country doesn’t need right now, it’s a weakkneed president. About Nixon’s return from his Latin,American trip: Johnson was at the airport to greet Nixon. Not so much because they had any great affection for each other, but because Johnson was relieved to know that with the vicepresident in this country, we were out of danger, temporarily, from any international incidents. Digging at Nixon’s campaign slogans of “Maturity and Experience’’: Johnson stated that as with any politician, Nixon had his own political philosophies and plans. Nelson Rockefeller, a man who has less than two years experience in politics, called Nixon to New York and completely reworked the vice-presidents’ political theories in a few hours. What would Khrushchev do with Nixon if he got him alone for a day? While it was a good, slam-bang political address, the Senator’s speech was not just jokes. He stated the Democratic views on several issues, and added that he would be in Washington thirty years in January “if the good Lord is willing, and the creeks don’t rise.” Senator Kennedy has been in the national legislature for 14 years, the same length of time Nixon has been active in government. ' During this total of 44 years, both men have been working for the betterment of the United States in the manners they thought best. They would like the opportunity to continue this work toward “new frontiers as President and Vice-President.

Gives Slight Defense Edge For Yankees By JOHN GRIFFIN United Free* International NEW YORK (DPI) — At the start of each World Series game there will be little to choose between the Yankees and Pirates defensively — but the edge could swing to the Yanks in the late innings when Casey Stengel starts juggling that lineup. Give it to the Pirates, if you will, at second base where Bill Mazeroski has more range than Bobby Richardson. And by all means give to the used-to-be-6moky City boys in left . field vrtiere Bob Skinner does a workmanlike job and Hector Lopez of the Yankees is so erratic that Stengel holds his breath every time a ball is hit to that area. 1 You can also concede a slight 1 edge to Pittsburgh at first base when Rocky Nelson is working ' there, for he’s more artistic with the glove than Moose Skowron. • However, that goes the other way . when Dick Stuart is playing, because then Skowron is the better . fielder. Better At Catch But you also have to give the Yankees a wide margin in catching, where either Yogi Berra or I Elston Howard is more adept ■ than Smoky Burgess or Hal .Smith. Bob Oldis, the Bucs’ thirdstringer. is a better receiver but too light a hitter to play regularly. You can differ on the other positions, and fans certainly will, but there are no marked differ- . ences. At shortstop, Tony Kubek of New York has a stronger . throwing arm but Dick Groat is slicker and Pirate sub Dick Schofield is smooth. Cletis Boyer of the Yanks and Don Hoak of the Pirates are both excellent third basemen. In right field, Bob Clemente has a somewhat stronger throwing arm than Roger Maris, but that’s cancelled in center where Mickey Mantle’s rifle is stronger than Bill Virdon’s. So what’s left? Maybe plenty. The. difference could well come in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings when Stengel, the master manipulator, starts sending in pich hitters, and pinch runners—and pinch fielders. For the Yankee bench seems to be much deeper in defensive talent. In addition, the starting players are more versatile and several can play two or three posi-

tions. Free Ta Juggle Thus Stngel is left free to do a great deal of juggling without much fear of weakening himself on defense. He has Gil McDougald, who can play second, short, or third superbly; Howard, who can catch, play first, or the outfield; and left fielder Bob Cerv. Richardson can shift to third; Kubek can play anywhere in the outfield; Boyer can play short. Pirate manager Danny Murtaugh doesn’t have this latitude. He has Schofield for second or ' short but might have to sub catcher Smith at third. There is Gene Baker for the infield and Gino Cimoli for the outfield. That’s pretty good protection in the ordinary course of matters. But Murtaugh doesn’t have the substitute freedom that Stengel j has. One other factor, of debatable 1 value, should be mentioned — the shadows in Yankee Stadium. ' From time to time in Series play, outfielders unfamiliar with the 1 Stadium have had trouble with these shadows, sometimes with ' disastrous results on fly balls. . But, on the other hand, Lopez 1 has trouble with fly balls most t of the time. k ! High School Football South Bend St. Joseph 21, South ' r Bend Riley 14. .
