He said the drug was administered to 175 patients, both orally i and by injection, earlier this year and within an hour or two after+ receiving the drug 113 patients obtained marked relief. They obtained complete relief within 24 to , 48 hours, he said. Complete relief was obtained by 18 patients within 48 to 98 hours. Eight took longer than 96 hours to get complete relief. Three needed additional results and three did not benefit from the drug, Lawrence said. Thirty others did not return to the clinic after their first visit and “must be Classified as treatment fail-1 ures,” Lawrence said. Lawrence said the only side! effects noted in the test was drowsiness and occasionally mild loss of coordination. Find Virus Linked j! To Human Cancer
NEW YORK (UPD — Scientists have discovered a virus linked to' human cancer. The newly found virus is associated with at least eight cancers of different types from various parts of the human body, the re-, searchers reported Wednesday night. If further research pins down the virus as the cause of cancer, broad new possibilities for com- j batting the dread disease will have j been opened. These might include I vaccines to prevent cancer and i early detection of cancers by spot* ting the virus in the system of a cancer victim. This was the second cancer virus discovery announced this year. Last March. Dr. Steven 0., Schwartz of the Hektoen Institute for Medical Research, Chicago, revealed he had isolated a virus that caused Leukemia, or "cancer; of the blood.” So far his work has 1 not been independently confirmed I by other scientists. The new discovery was made
GOVERNMENT (Continued from page I) More recently, Tully noted, “personnel of the American Embassy have been detained and! questioned in violation of the rules | and customs which govern diplo-1 matic immunity.” Teams from the U.S.' Embassy ■ have visited American residents privately to counsel them to ship j their dependents out immediately, and to leave themselves unless vital businss. requires them to stay. 2,000 in Havana Affected The advisory would apply to an estimated 2.000 American civilians living in greater Havana. However, it was not known! whether it applied to the 6,000 American families living on the great U.S. naval base at Guantanamo. The Cuban government has expelled four embassy attaches in as many weeks and arrested and harassed at least three others, ignoring their diplomatic status. Repeated U.S. protests have either been ignored or received and filed by minor Cuban diplomatic functionaries without reply.
