Huge Crackdown On Gamblers In Nation WASHINGTON (UPD—AII bets were off today for bookies and lottery operators in at least 38 cities where federal revenue agents conducted raids Wednesday night in a large-scale crackdown on gambling. The International Revenue Service reported 93 arrests were made in raids on 62 locations in 38 cities in 22 states. These figurs were expected to rise when all reports were in. Those picked up were charged with violating the federal law requiring gamblers to buy special SSO tax stamps and pay a 10 per cent federal tax on gross income. The coordinated raids followed the pattern of a similar roundup staged at several dozen localities in April. Targets of the roundup were horse racing bookies and gamblers who work the policy, or numbers, game. Reports showed arrests made in Manhattan and Brooklyn as well as in upstate New York at Niagara Falls and Syracuse. Other cities included Detroit and suburban River Rouge; Chicago and suburban Highwood, Centralia, Ill.; Pittsburgh, Sharpsburg, McKeesport, Homewood and Waynesburg, Pa.; St. Louis and suburban University City, Mo.; Lawrence, Mass.; Bridgeport, New Haven, West Haven and Stamford, Conn.; Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Frankfort, Ky., and Clinton, Sharonville, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio.
