heavy waves. It Is now 1:20 p.m. and things are about the same. Heavy winds with gusts around 90 miles per hour. The center of the storm seems to be located somewhere around Naples, however, radar tracking is not easy since the heavy rains at the rear of the storm make reading difficult. Fort Myers has evacuated the islands around the bay area, however, several people would not leave because they were not allowed to

take their pets with them. We can only pray that they will not perish with their animals. There is still the sitting out to be done. No power and now no water—you can see now why we fill our bath tubs with water before these storms hit. We Just had a terrible gust of wind, the whole house seemed to tremble as though some large hand had just given ft a shove. By now, 2 p.m., 100 mile per hour gusts of wind have become
a common thing. A large limb has now ripped the power line, meter and an off the side of the house. A large lime tree has fallen against the side of the house and is a threat to the window in one of our bathrooms. Another large limb has faUen on the back of the car. I cannot see if ft- has done any damage because it would be extremely foolish to go, out in this weather. Georgia just called me to look at the branch that was on the bathroom window. It is the top half of a rather large oak tree that is lying on the side of the house. What Next? It is 3:25 and still no letup in the fury of the storm. More debris, more rain, sometimes heavy, sometimes none at all. You would really find it hard to believe that the air through which the birds glide so gracefully could charge across the land with the fury of all the demons of hell. I’ve been standing just on the porch and the sound is deafening; like three or four jets flying overhead. Then comes the heavy gusts and as it tears around the house it screams like a demon possessed. I am now listening to the radio. “Donna” is just off Fort Myers. The weather man said that winds were 90 miles per hour with gusts of 110 miles. It will be even with us (to the east) soon, then there will be a lull of around 30 minutes and after that she will attack with even more fury, and in -the other direction. This attack will be loaded with rain—about 8 inches. Barometer now reads 28.7, this is low. This is why you are advised to open a window on the lee side of your house during the storm. In well built houses, when the air pressure drops on the outside, pressure can cause windows to blow outward, or even a wall to blow outward—hard to believe you say—l agree, but never-the-less it is true. Just had cold chicken, bean salad, potato chips and (bless our little sterno burner) a cup of hot coffee. Georgia had the foresight to cook the chicken before the storm hit yesterday. As you know we have no lights, no water and no refrigeration. There is no rain in the wind now, just wind, wind, wind. The picture is beginning to change. The wind, which had been coming from the northeast is now coming out of the south-southeast. A very large oak has fallen across Main street. We live on the corner of Frazier and Main. Our telephone is now dead, another large limb stripped the line from the house. The very large pecan tree that we have on the side of the house is not long for this world. To give you an idea of how strong the wind 3 has been, the tree is some three feet in diameter, one of the largest I have ever seen, but is beginning to lean. If you look at the ground where the roots go in, it looks as though there was water under the ground and that small swells were working underground. Sheron and Greg just came in to where I am typing and announced that the lemon tree had just relaxed its hold on mother earth and dropped to the ground. Now the “eye” has passed Fort Myers. The hell-like fury of this tropical storm tears loose in the other direction. Winds are now 94 miles per hour with gusts up to 130 miles. How do you describe the invisible distinction of wind? Georgia and I have been through these storms before, but never one like this. So far there has been little or no rain in our questionable girl friend. Where are the 8 inches we were promised; I hope they never come — but again, we wait. The house on the other side of the street, a quite old two story place, has literally “blown its top.” The roof is of sheet metal which usually gives you a very pleasant sound as light rain dances on it in the evenings, now it is a grotesque, twisted mass of agonized metal. Now it slows down, steady winds of 60 to 75 miles per hour, on and on and on. It seems as though the wind has always been blowing. We’ve only been here one week and we have seen what some people never see in a life time. The winds continue to blow. One of the deacons of the church just came by the house. He works for the Florida forestry service and has tried to call, but the phone has been out and he had

in Florida, 1» miles from town. He said that at last contact their roof was beginning to give and he was worried about them. We hopped into his forestry truck
and started for the woods. All the way we see twisted, uprooted trees. What was once small line shacks are now small scattered piles of kindling wood. When we arrive we find the family well, although quite frightened — the tower is down! It fell, missing the house by about 10 to 15 feet The frightened mother tells us, “I was mopping up water near the window when I looked out, it was 10 minutes until 2, I had just looked at my watch; the tower began to sway and then started to fall—l closed my eyes and prayed.” Her prayer had been answered, there was destruction instead of disaster. The once proud 100 foot tower that stood as an erect sentry, guarding against the forest’s most deadly enemy, fire; was now dead. It was no longer straight and tall, but a twisted, broken mass of crippled metal, lying helpless behind the house ft barely missed. We returned home and in the growing darkness could see white caps on swamp water. The wind still caused the rain to dance crazily across the grasslands. Coons, snakes and sea gulls dotted the road, confused by the trick that mother nature was playing on them. The night was dark, since we had only candles to see by. The wind, although diminishing, still made an erie sound as ft whipped around the house. “Donna” was
leaving us and behind her she left a mass of rubble and distraction and even death to thoae who would net heed the warnings foatn the weather man. At church this morning only a handful of people attended. The sun shown clear and the people prayed. The storm was over and now the job of clean-up would begin. Power will toe off for several days and care must be taken so as not to get food poisoning or sickness from stale water. After the clean-up is over and the power restored we will look at the land and “Donna” wist only be an unpleasant memory. Even through it all we can be glad for “if God is with us, who can be against us.”
