Lodge Invades Strongholds Os State Democrats SOUTH BEND, Tnd (UPD— Henry Cabot Lodge, the Republican vice presidential nominee, tackled one of his toughest assignments in Indiana today. Lodge invaded two of the most rock-ribbed Hoosier Democratic bailiwicks—St. Joseph and Lake Counties—in an effort to convert them to the GOP. These two counties, with heavy Catholic populations, were the spawning grounds of the Indiana presidential campaign of Sen. John F. Kennedy, who has cov ered them thoroughly with his oratory. Both counties are represented by Democratic congressmen and their county and city officials, almost without exception, are Democrats. Lodge apparently wished for hard going because he cancelled dates in two easier counties for the Republicans—Delaware and Madison. He had been scheduled to go there Friday. Dae at 11 A.M. Lodge, the former ambassador to the United Nations where things are popping today, was due by plane in South Bend at 11 a.m. DRIVE-IN THEATER FRI. & SAT. CDT. A motorcade from the St. Joseph County airport to the steps of the county courthouse was slated after official greetings from Governor Handley and GOP officials and the appearance of motor caravans from the area. There are no local officials of Lodge’s ilk to greet him. All are Democrats. Because the weather forecast is sos showers, the Lodge meeting may be held in the Morris Civic Auditorium, instead of at the courthouse. Although the University of Notre Dame is a favorite visiting place for the Kennedy family. Lodge is scheduled to deliver an address there at 1:40 p.m. Invading Lake County, which is even more Democratic than St. Joseph, the vice presidential candidate of the Republicans is scheduled for a tour of the Gary steel mills, with much handshaking, a news conference later at the Gary hotel and then a meeting at East Chicago whose mayor, Walter Jeorse, is a pioneer Kennedy booster. Hoosier Appeal Grows Lodge told audiences in upper New York State Tuesday that he “stood up to the Russians” and that is his major appeal to Hoosiers, according to politicos. Handley opposed him vigorously for the nomination, but since that time the Indiana GOP leaders have changed their tune. One chieftain said he believes Lodge may develop more charm for the Hoosier voters than Vice President Richard M. Nixon, who spoke in Fort Wayne Wednesday. With the tempestuous proceedings of the United t Nations all over the front pages,' the interest in Lodge's remarks has grown notably. Lodge campaigned over Wisconsin Wednesday and said the two government code specialists who defected to the Soviet Union should be shot. “Both of them are traitors and if we could get hold of them we ought to shoot them,” he said, referring to William Martin and Bernon Mitchell. Lodge spent most of his time in Wisconsin traveling through metropolitan areas where he was received warmly. G.O.P. Headquarters Will Open Saturday Further plans for the formal opening of Republican headquarters in the Rice hotel Saturday night were announced today by John M Doan, Republican county chairman. The opening meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Rep E. Ross Adair will be the principal speaker. Others to attend will be Mrs. Adair and Dr. George W Gillie, former fourth district congressman. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited. The Young Republican club will meet at 7:30 p.m-. Monday at the headquarters, with the president of the Allen county Young Republicans as the guest speaker.
