New Haven To Play Jackets Here Friday The Decatur Yellow Jackets, with an undefeated season of two wins and a tie, take on. the ever strong New Haven Bulldogs at Worthman Field Friday night in another important NEIC conference. • ■' r . > The Jackets played their best game of the season last Friday against Garrett and with a couple of breaks they could have had a win instead of the tie. But a tie isn’t going to hurt their conference standing any if they keep playing the brand of football they have shown in their first three games. Friday’s game * against New Haven will be a completely different type contest than the Garrett game. New Haven isn’t nearly as big as Garrett but the - Bulldogs, are fast, fast and faster. A quick look at the weights listed on the Bulldog roster would lead one to think they are a pushover, but they aren’t. For one thing. New Haven always has one of the smallest teams on the Decatur schedule every year, but every year they are mean, hard-charg-ing and play the game of football to the hilt. Also, it seems that their coaching staff thinks they are fooling other teams with the weights they have listed. The weights listed this year are the same that were given last year, and any team that has a group of boys who don’t put on any weight in a year’s time shouldn’t be playing football. The Columbia City paper made these same accusations before their Eagles played New Haven last week. Doty Twice NEIC The Bulldog offensive will be led by senior Jerry Doty, an all-con-ference first team halfback in his sophomore and junior years. Doty tore the Columbia City defensive team to shreds last week, as he picked up 187 yards rushing, an average of 15.5 yards a carry. Marion Kinnison, 5-6, 165 pound fullback averaged nine yards a carry and 145 pound Bill Hanley, Doty’s running mate at halfback, also averaged about nine yards a try. New Haven attempted only five passes the whole game and completed none, which points out their strength—a running game. The Jackets hit a high point in their young season Friday and some people are saying they have reached their peak and there is bound to be a letdown this Friday. There can’t be a letdown though, if the Jackets do, then New Haven will walk all over them. Gaining Fans The letdown is just the opinion of a few though as the Jackets are really gaining backers with the slam-bang brand of football. Last Friday’s game set a new all-time attendance record for Decatur football. Worthman field was filled to the light towers for that game and indications are that the week old record will be broken again this Friday. This year’s edition of Decatur

high school football is the type of team that faces up to a challenge and meets it, with rough and rugged football. These boys don’t like to disappoint anybody and if they keep getting the type of crowds they have been having there won’t be a letdown the whole season. These boys want to win! Kendallville And Concordia Top NEIC Standing Kendallville’s Komets and Concordia’s Cadets are at the top ors the Northeastern Indiana conference standings, with Decatur’s Yellow Jackets right on their heels. The Komets and Cadets have a victory apiece while the Jackets have two victories and a tie. New Haven, with a victory and a tie, is right behind the Jackets. This will set the stage for the Friday night game between the two teams. The winner will stay’ in contention while the loser will definitely be hurt. A win for the Jackets Friday will give them a clear-cut shot at the title. The Decatur team has both Kendallville and Concordia on their schedule. Bluffton principal and conference head Fred Park has announced that each tie game is scored percentage wise as a half game won and a half game lost. This rule was adopted by the conference a few years ago. Standings W L Tie Pet. The win gave the Association regular season champions a 4-3 edge in best-of-seven semifinal games. Louisville, semifinal victors over St. Paul, face the Bears j in the opener of best-of-seven finals at Denver tonight. Denver spotted Houston three runs in the first inning on Jim McKnight’s homer with two aboard but came back with five runs in the second and were never headed. Jim McDaniel and Bubba Morton homered for the Bears in the second and McDaniel added another Denver homer in the third.
Big Ten To Open Season On Saturday By United Press International Big Ten grid squads went on the defensive today with season openers four days away. Michigan Coach Bump Elliott sent the Wolverines through a short defensive workout against Saturday opponent Oregon’s splitT offense Monday, before rounding off with a dummy scrimmage for his own offense. End John Halstead, a 1959 starter who suffered a knee infection, appeared to be the only question mark in Michigan's line-up. At Evanston, 111., Northwestern’s Wildcats spent the day with anti-fumble drill in preparation for Oklahoma Saturday. Quarterback Dick Thornton and tackle Fate Echols rejoined the first team. Both men saw only limited action in last Saturday's final intrasquad game. Purdue Faces UCLA Purdue, which meets UCLA this weekend, concentrated on defense after a warning from scout and assistant coach Ned Magoney that the West Coast Bruins, who upset Pittsburgh last week, were a much better team than the club that held Purdue to a scoreless tie last year. Minnesota’s Gophers were at near-full strength Monday as Coach Murray Warmath stressed ground plays he’ll unfold against Nebraska Saturday. Right end Bob Deegan, who cut his arm in Saturday's scrimmage, was expected to be back in action this weekend. Wisconsin took to the air, on both defense and offense Monday. Badger Coach Milt Bruhn said Tom Mettlach, junior quarterback from Arcadia, Wis., might be out for the season while a broken arm mends. lowa Scouts Report lowa Coach Forest Evashevski put the Hawkeyes through a tough defensive scrimmage against lowa freshmen running from Oregon State’s single wing. Assistant coaches Whitey Piro and Archie Kodros offered no comfort with their scouting report on Oregon State’s 14-0 upset win Saturday over Southern California. Ohio State also worked part of the day on defense, where Coach Woody Hayes is counting on a crop of fast-learning sophomores. Illinois still had a problem in the center of its line as Stan Yukevich’s leg infection failed to heal as quickly as Coach Pete Elliott had expected. A possible replacement was junior John Kruze, who saw only limited action last year. Fullback Jim Brown’s broken hand was still in a cast but Pat Lennon returned to action at left guard. Spartans Seek Halfback Michigan State’s Spartans held light signal drills to start a week jof minor scrimmages in preparation for their opener against Pittsburgh. Coach Duffy Daugherty said his starting line-up is set except at halfback, where he must choose two starters out of six men he said could handle the assignment. Injuries restricted halfbacks Herb Adderley and Gary Ballman, both 1959 regulars. Indiana worked against an Illinois offense and then went through a lengthy session on the blocking dummies at Bloomington. Sophomore Woody Moore took over the No. 2 tailback spot behind Joe Maroon. Notre Dame Coach Joe Kuharich, who scouted opening rivals California in the Bears’ loss to Tulane, 7-3, last weekend, said Monday he fears the Irish can’t “score against them at all. California looked very good in spots and definitely frightens us.” Bowling Scores Merchant League W L Pts. Frosh-Sophomore Team Loses Monday A big Elmhurst freshman-sopho-more team handed the Yellow Jackets freshman-sophomore team its first loss of the season at Worthman field Monday night by a 19-0 score. The teams played through two and a half quarters of scoreless football before an Elmhurst back shot off tackle and romped to a touchdown. Minutes later Decatur punted, the Elmhurst safety fielded the ball and ran through the entire Decatur team to make the score 13-0. The Trojans also added an insurance TD in the final period to make the, final score UW. Decatur suffered a bad break just before the first Elmhurst touchdown when Ron Thieme smashed off tackle and ran about 40 yards to score, but a Decatur penalty nullified the tally. Rocky Finlayson, former Decatur student, was in the Elmhurst lineup and played a fine game. Five Yellow Jackets Among Top Scorers A total of five Decatur Yellow Jackets are listed in the top ten scorers in the Northeastern Indiana*uonference, according to latest figures released by the conference. Quarterback John Cowan is tied with Columbia City’s Cook and Doty of *New Haven for the top spot. All three boys have scored three touchdowns. Denny Ahr, Decatur fullback, is tied with New Haven fullback Marion Kinnison for the number four position with 13 points. Ahr and Kinnison have scored two TD’s and an extra point each. Halfback Ed Nelson is tied with Concordia’s Doehrman for the sixth spot, each scoring two touchdowns. Halfback Tom Grabill, who will miss a couple of games due to a wrist injury, is right behind these two with a touchdown and three extra points for nine points. Close behind Grabill is end Tom Johnson, who is in the ninth position with a touchdown and an extra point for seven points. There has been a mix-up in the scoring as the conference gave Denny Ahr one of Nelson’s touchdowns, but this will be remedied by next week.

Cardinals Win Over Dodgers Monday Night By FRED DOWN United Press International The St. Louis Cardinals — true to the Gashouse Gang tradition of the club — are still swinging.. , and hoping. The odds and the experts insist that the Pittsburgh Pirates are “in” but it’s not mathematically certain yet and until it is the Redbtrds aren’t conceding they’re dead birds. Solly Hemus' fighting crew kept their faint hopes alive Monday night when they pulled out a pressure-packed 1-0 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers on a sixth-inning homer by Jersey Joe : Cunningham! The victory moved, the Cardinals to within 5% games of the idle Pirates and also eliminated the world champion Dodgers from the National League race. The San Francisco Giants swept a doubleheader from the Chicago Cubs, 11-4 and 4-1, in Monday’s only other big league action. Bob Miller, making his first start since June 7, received credit for his fourth win for the Cardinals although relief ace Lindy McDaniel rushed to his rescue with one out and one on in the ninth. McDaniel struck out Tommy Davis and pinch-hitter Wally Moon to end the game and extend his string of consecutive scoreless relief innings against the Dodgers to 20 1-3. Cunningham, who hadn’t hit a home run since July 31, entered the game when Stan Musial pulled a muscle in his left arm in the third inning and connected for the game-winning homer off Stan Williams in the sixth. It was Williams, incidentally, who won the second game of the 1959 playoff with the Milwaukee Braves’ and put the Dodgers in the World Series. Eddie Fisher, pitcher recalled from Tacoma, yielded nine hits and had three singles of his own, Willie Kirkland (hit two homers and Willie Mays had two singles for the Giants in their opener. Bob Schmidt’s second grand slam of his career won the nightcap which was called after eight innings due to darkness. • Jorge Fernandez Winner Over Red! NEW YORK (UPI) — Jorge Fernandez, 150, of Buenos Aires smashed his way to a unanimous decision win over Stefan Red!, 150%, of Patterson, N.J., in a 10round middleweight bout Monday night at St. Nicholas Arena. There were no knockdowns but Fernandez, using an aggressive, two-fisted attack, left Redl dazed at the end of the fight. Stengel To Announce Plans In October NEW YORK (UPI) — Manager Casey Stengel of the New York Yankees said today he will decide “in October” whether he will return as the Yankee skipper next season. "Right now I’m in this pennant race and I’m working for the New York ball club,” said Stengel. “I have a contract, and I will decide in October what I am going to do.” Reports that Stengel will retire at the end of the current season have been rife ever since spring training.

1 Today's Sport Parade 1 <Beg. ÜB. Pat. Off.) By JACK CUDDY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — Add the sparkle of romance to an improved change-of-pace slider and you get a Ralph Terry who may be moving ’em down in next month’s World Series. The handsome rawboned Yankee right-hander, who pitched a key shutout against Baltimore at the stadium Sunday, attributed his recent effectiveness today to “Tanya and the slider.” Dark-Haired Tanya Simmons of Larnea, Kans., is Ralph’s fiance. They’ll be married in November. An airline hostess, she flew in from Kansas City Monday to observe her 24th birthday with Ralph, also 24. “I was really hopin’ for a nohitter Sunday against the Orioles,” admits the fast-ball specialist. “I wanted it for a birthday present to Tanya. And I was sure disappointed when Ron Hansen got that single in the eighth.” Yields Second Hit That other single by Jackie Brandt in the ninth added but little chagrin to the six - foot - three flinger with the light brown hair. The Yanks won the nightcap, 2-0, and thereby clipped the Baltimore Birdies for four straight games and a four-game lead that ultimately may wrap up the pennant. It was the second consecutive shutout for the chucker from Chelsea, Okla. He had retired 20 straight batters before Brooks Robinson walked in the seventh Sunday. “Those *wo shutout games were not flukes,” he explains. “I’m pitching a lot better now than last month because I’ve improved my change-of-ace slider — my slow curve, off-center slider — and got control of it and better delivery motion.” Ed Lopat, the pitching coach, had helped him a lot with the change-of-pace. And Terry is a much more determined mound student than in the past “because of my approaching marriage responsibilities.” Now, for the first time in his four-season major league career, he has a dependable change-of-pace to use as an auxiliary weapon with his fast ball, he says. Give* Confidence “You can’t begin to imagine what a difference that makes to a pitcher,” he stresses, ‘What a feeling of confidence it gives him. When a fast-ball pitcher has to depend upon speed alone, he’s likely to tire himself in the late innings of today’s game — and still be tired the next time out. , “That used to happen to me, particularly when I’d go in for early relief in a tight situation — with the bases loaded or something — and have to shoot the works from then on.” Ralph hopes he can continue as a starter, and pace himself well in every game, instead of doing all-out rescue work. Terry, who came to the Yankees from Kansas City in a trade in late May, 1959, craves a pennant victory because of his personal pride in Casey Stengel’s club and because of the money a World Series would bring to a prospective bridegroom. "I’d love to pitch in my first World Series.” he says, “But Casey has other good starters: Whitey Ford, Bob Turley, Art Ditmar and Jim Coates. Maybe there’s not much chance for me.” The world’s highest cable car is in the French Alpine resort of Chamonix. It rises to 12,605 feet in 25 minutes up the slopes of Mont Blanc.
