S. Election Day for the shot. George M. Low, an official of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, made the prediction Friday to editors and publishers attending United Press International's Washington conference. He said the United States did not plan to put a man into orbit until sometime next year. But, he added, even if Russia got its man up first, the U. S. program must be continued if this country is to win space leadearship in the future. “I am firmly convinced that the Soviets now have the capability of achieving manned space flight” Low said. “I believe they are awaiting only an appropriate time to send their man, or men, into space.” He said “you can speculate’’ that the Soviet Union might attempt the feat to coincide with the forthcoming United meeting; the third anniversary of Sputnik I on Oct. 4; the American Election Day on Nov. 8, or the anniversary of the Russian Revolution in November. Denver Broncos Win Pro League Opener BOSTON (UPI) — You don’t have to feel sorry for the Denver Broncos anymore. The poor Broncos, who dropped all five of their exhibition games, are leading the infant American Football League today. The Broncos kicked off the AFL’s first season here Friday night by shocking the heavily-fa-vored Boston Patriots, 13-10. And though Denver Coach Frankie Filchock was quick to laud the stars of the game — quarterback Frank Tripucka, and halfbacks Al Carmichael and Gene Mingo—he credited his line with being the key to the upset. “You can’t take anything away from these three; they were great,” he said. “But don’t overlook our defense. That was the key.” The Broncos were outscored, 200 to 54 while losing all their pre-season games. Included in the defeats was a 43-6 trampling by the Patriots last month. Coach Lou Saban of Boston offered no excuses. “It was a shocker I might have been expecting all along,” he said. “We knocked them off so easily before, but they’ve since picked up a lot of experienced players from the Canadian League and the National Football League. And their technique was vastly improved.” The rest of the league also debuts this week. Dallas plays at Los Angeles tonight, while Houston is at Oakland and Buffalo is at New York Sunday. Schricker, Democratic candidate for governor of Indiana, will headline the opening meeting of the election campaign in Adams county, speaking at the Decatur high school Sept. 21. The Adams county tax adjustment board has approved proposed tax rates for the Decatur civil city, school city and public library. Phil Sauer, H. P. Schmitt and the Rev. Paul Schultz went to Cleveland to see the Indians play the New York Yankees. Four hundred men, women and children were killed as a Nazi bomb struck a school house in London. Buckingham palace was also damaged by bombs as aerial war continues. The annual men’s congress of the Evangelical and Reformed churches of Northern Indiana and Michigan will be held Sunday at Fort Wayne.

Drug Head Reports On Research Costs WASHINGTON (UPI) —A New York antibiotic manufacturer told j Senate investigators today his ; company has spent almost $2 on ] research for every $1 it has made ■ in profits. Dr. Philip I. Bowman, president of Briistol Laboratories, said in prepared testimony that the company’s research outlays last year represented more than 16 per cent of sales while profits amounted toj only 8.4 per cent of domestic i sales. Bowman, whose firm is a divi- ■ sion of Bristol - Myers Co., ap- t peared before the Senate antitrust and monopoly subcommittee headed by Sen. Estes Kefauver, (D-Tenn.) The subcommittee is looking into charges that five or six drug manufacturers control the price of antibiotics and make excessive profits. Bristol Labora tor i< makes the antibiotic tetracycline Bowman said his company had made improvements in the drug without raising the price even though wages and the cost of many ingredients had gone up substantially. Flower Floater You can float a bouquet of small flowers in a bowl by using a disk cut from the heavily waxed card- j board of a milk carton. The flow-' ers are supported by inserting the! individual stems in holes punch-; ed into the disk. Because it is so thoroughly saturated with wax, the disk will float almost indefinitely. Tough Soap Bubbles You can provide some good, tough soap bubbles for your children by dissolving an ounce of fine-fabric soap flakes in eight ounces of water, adding four ounces of glycerin, and mixing this thoroughly.
