Motorists Beware! As summer vacation draws to a close, all of us who drive must again think about the school children. Within a few weeks throughout the country the ring of the school bell, figuratively at least, will knell the end of vacation. Unwilling feet will wend slowly toward the schoolhouse door, and speedy, alert bodies controlled by unthinking, immature minds will again be darting in and out of traffic. Nothing could be worse than running into a small child. Every driver dreads the thought of such a thing. But every driver must stay on his toes as school starts to avoid such an occurence. We have been very fortunate in Decatur and around the county this year in the low number of pedestrian deaths. But they can happen here when we let down our Keep your mind alert" when you drive. Watch out for children. Give every pedestrian the right of way, if you can do so safely. And watch behind cars ahead of you for bobbing little heads. Be particularly careful near schools. When you see a policeman ahead, giving signals, slow down. He's not their for his health—he’s there for yours. And watch out for school buses. In traveling over the state they will appear at all sorts of odd hours. Just slow down when you come to a hill—it’s the only way you can be absolutely sure that a horrible accident isn’t waiting for you just on the other side.

Jackets To Have Depth At Quarter, Fullback Slots
(Editor’s note: This is the fifth i and last of a series outlining, ' position by position, the boys i who will make up Decatur’s 1960 1 football team.) 1 1 By Bob Shraluka I Today we take up the fullbacks j and quarterbacks. Both positions are well taken care of in the . depth department, but the fallback I spot will definitely be inexpert- . enced. Running at full will be three , sophomores, with the possibility , of a halfback being moved in also. Slated to be in the opening line- j up>_ was_ 5-8, 165-pound sophomore ( Bill Conrad, but "Cixinie "suffer- ( ed a knee injury last week and is , now listed as a doubtful starter. ' Once Bill’s knee recovers, though, he could very easily win his job back. Bill is ideal for the fullback , position as he is not only strong . and rough but is fast also. He is a vicious blocker and when he isn't 1 carrying the ball he looks for . somebody to knock down, which too' many others don’t do. He is fast and can pick up three or three or four yards with any kind of blocking at all. He was slated to start as linebacker on defense, but whether his knee will permit him to get back in the lineup is a question that can’t be answered at the present time. If Conrad isn’t ready, sophomores Ron Thieme and Dave Gay or halfback Dennis Ahr could take over. Thieme is a 5-9, 165pounder with powerful legs. He can move fairly well, too. Ron likes to play the slot and will run over somebody if he can’t get around them. Gay is 5-10 and weighs 145 pounds and is gaining valuable experience all the time. With a little game action under his belt he could really be tough. He and Thieme can both play a good defensive game. The third possibility is Ahr, who: was discussed yesterday with the halfbacks. He has been running sdme from fullback injury and may be the starting .fullback. They always say save the best for last and that's what we've done. The quarterback position appears to be sound and solid and there is only one thing that can' weaken it. That is the intangible ■ item called “desire” but so far: the quarterback spot appears to have plenty of it. The likely starter is senior Johnny Cowan, an athlete who has all | the tools to become great. But the j first time John even so much as ■ thinks of slowing up. junior Max | Eichenauer is ready to take over, j John hasn’t shown any signs of taking it easy as yet and looks to be ready to* do an outstanding job. Cowan is as close to a.‘‘natural” as anyone on the He is quick, and at 5-11, 155 pounds has some strength to go along with his agility. He has a wonder ful pair of lightning-quick hands which is the trademark of any quarterback. He can fake wonderfully and his passing, although’ not too accurate, is good enough to get the job done. And anytime John can’t find a man to throw to, he can get loose and at least get the ball back to the scrimmage line, if not go all the way. John, who is at the head of his high school class, also possesses the brains and quick thinking that a good quarterback must have — now all he has to do is prove it! As stated before, if Cowan ever lays down on the job, Max Eichenauer will be ready and able. Max doesn't possess all the qualities of Cowan, but whatever he lacks he certainly makes up for with that intangible item "desire.” He is a 5-10, 160 pounder who never gives up no matter how tough the going gets, as he showed during the latter part of the last basketball season. He doesn’t have much experience, but the way he plays the game it wouldn’t take

much to make him outstanding. “Ike” has a real good throwing arm and can run. These aren’t his only qualities though, as he, like Cowan, can think and put his thoughts to good use. Both he and Cowan, according to which one is playing, will be playing defensive half. Well that wraps it up, at least the thumbnailing of the players. The biggest and hardest part is yet to conje. It is the hope of this writer that the boys don’t read these clippings too often, because they are just looking at their good points. It is also this writer’s hope that the men on the 1960 Decatur high., school . tootball. -team don’t let him down after all the good things he has tried to say about them, because if they don’t work hard and put forth something extra, that can always be put in the paper Also. It doesn’t take a winning season to make a good ball club, rather, just a bunch of guys who go out and do their best and work their hardest, not only for their fans, but the fine coaching staff that is behind them all the way. It won't be long now to the Angola game on Sept. 6, so let’s keep working, gang, and put Decatur back on the football map.

Tuesday, McMillen will play Tony’s Tap with the loser being eliminated and the winner meeting Klenks Friday for the championship. Booster Club Plans Annual Member Drive The Decatur high school Booster club will begin its annual membership drive Monday. President Ray Eichenauer has announced the names of seven men who, with three yet to be added, will form a committee to. lead the drive. The Booster club currently has 110 members and is setting a goal of 150 for the coming year. Committeemen named are, Fred Isch, John Isch, Jim Cowens, Norm Steury, Dick Reidenbach, Ray Eichenauer and Gail Grabill. The names of the other three will be announced Monday. The club’s officers for the 196061 year are Ray Eichenauer, president; Norm Steury, vice president; Dick Reidenbach, secretary; and Jim Cowens, treasurer. The thre'e-man board of directors includes Fred Isch. Gerald Strickler and Gail Grabill. The Booster club was started back in 1955 when a group of men decided to give the members of the football team a small banquet. Some of the men got to thinking after the banquet as to having a small organization and put on the same banquet each year. The men elected Bud Anspaugh as their president. The next year the group decided to form something of a Booster club to support athletics in Decatur high school. Now the small group has grown into a large group of 110 members shooting for a record goal of 150 memberships for the 1960-61 year.

That little banquet for the football team was actually the first project at the club. The club’s last project can now be seen anywhere around the area of Worthman field. It is the new schedule board and its shows the remarkable progress the club has made since 1955. Hie board is 15 feet wide and 12 feet high, and in another few days it will contain the complete schedule of the Decatur high school football team. The sign, which reads across the top, “Worthman Field, Home of thte Yellow Jackets,” is a beautiful and welcome addition to the field. Thursday night the board was completde with the guy wires put up and the sign capped in aluminum. Jim Cowens, Fred Isch, Ray Seitz, Bob Worthman, Ray Eichenauer, Bud Anspaugh, Norm Steury and Charlie Arnold were the men who finished. Some of the other worthwhile projects of the club were the erecting of a new flag pole at the field in 1957, the building of dugouts for baseball in 1959, the annual Parent’s night at a home football game, homecoming night in 1958 and the annual football banquet which has grown quite a bit since that first year, and many others. The dub also helps with the annual D-club banquet each year. The club already has three of four new projects in the fire. One will be the awarding of a most valuable player award for the outstanding player in this year's football games and another award for the most tackles in a game. Similar awards will be given in basketball. Parent’s night will be the opening game this year and a homecoming night will be held later in the season and it will be bigger
and better than ever. This is one of the most worthwhile clubs of any kind that has ever been organized in Decatur and as shown by their progress since 1955, the bigger the club the more and better projects. Membership is $5 and includes two free meals, the football banquet and D-club banquet. The drive starts Monday, and it is the hope of the club that the 150 goal is not only obtained, but even exceeded.
