Ohio Senator Blocks Postmaster's Job The appointment of Donald P. Hurless, nominated several months ago, is one of 38 postmasterships being blocked by Democratic senator Stephen A. Young, of Ohio. Sen. Young, as most senators of the “out” party, is holding up all postmaster nominations until after the fall election, so that Democrats instead of Republicans can be appointed if Sen. Kennedy defeats Nixon for president. It is a senate custom not to confirm a nomination if a senator from the state involved declines to approve the nqmination.

Human Flies Paint a Decatur Bridge About 18 “human flies” were found working on the St. Mary’s river bridge on U.S. 27, just outside Decatur today. The men are from Baker Bros, of Indianapolis, and will be working on the bridge the next few days. They are cleaning off the bridge, removing the rust and then will give it a good coat of red lead paint where the rust appears on the bridge. After the red paint drys, they will give the bridge two coats of aluminum paint. The northbound lane of traffic is blocked off under the bridge making it one-way traffic. After the red paint drys on the east side of the bridge, southbound traffic will be held and the west side of the bridge will be painted. The reason for blocking one lane is to prevent any paint from dripping on the cars. True (Tabby) Andrews, bridge inspector for the state highway department, who inspects the bridges when they are finished, said that six other bridges in the county are to be painted, including the Wabash river bridge near Geneva, a bridge south of Geneva, one east of Geneva, another east of Monroe, one in Blue ‘Creek township and the overflow bridge on 27. just north of the bridge now being painted. The overflow bridge has steel underneath and must be worked on. o— 0 20 Years Ago Today 0 —— C Aug. 17, 1940—Officials and fieldmen of the Central Sugar Co. have returned from a fishing trip to Basswood Lake, Minn. American Speech Called Propaganda STOCKHOLM <UPD—A Swedish official of the International Astronautical Congress today interrupted American space expert Spencer Beresford midway through a speech in which he said that U-2 reconnaissance flights were legal. Curt Grocnfors, chairman of the corigrress’s space law meetings, had insisted even .before Beresford gave his address that it was “political propaganda.” He said the part of the speech “dealing with the U-2 incident will not be put on the congressional records.” Beresford is a counsel for the' U.S. House space subcommittee. He was permitted to resume his talk after British delegate Chris-
topher Shawcross left the session in anger, protesting that Groenfors had no right to interrupt the American. The American’s speech, entitled “High Altitude Surveillance in International Law,” contended that U-2 flights, such as the one made by Francis Gary Powers, about to stagd trial on Moscow on charges .of espionage, were legal. Local Man Involved In Van Wert Wreck Minor damage occurred when autos driven by Paul D. Linton, 30, of route one, Ohio City, 0., collided with an auto driven by Edward A. Nation's Industry Steady In July WASHINGTON <UPI) — The nation’s industrial production held steady in July, the Federal Reserve Board reported today. The board’s July index of the output from the nation’s mines, mills and utilities was unchanged from June at 109 per cent of the 1957 average. This was about the' same level at which the index has hovered since early spring. “Iron and steel production showed somewhat more than the usual sharp curtailment in July,” the board said. Steel mills, operating at half offcapacity. were 30 per cent below the 1957 level. However, most steel consuming industries were holding at or above the 1957 average. Auto production fell about .12 per cent last month, partly reflecting strikes at plants of a major producer, the board noted. The over - all production index has moved within a relatively narrow range this year. It registered 111 last January—matching the all-time record high — and dropped to 109 in June. Today’s report said consumer goods output in July was somewhat lower than June. Business equipment lines reported record production, however, and materials production held steady in July after declining during the first half of the year.
