Giants Deserve Slump, But Kaline Doesn't By OSCAR FRALEY United Press International NEW YORK (UPl)—The reeling San Francisco Giants and a real nice guy named Al Kaline shaped up today as the baseball patsies of the year. The Giants deserve it. Kaline doesn't. That’s because the Giants sold their fans down th<- bay by tossing in the sponge while Kaline Iras tried everything and nothing seems to work. They have a lot of company in the patsy league; Mickey Mantle, Herb Score, Johnny Antonelli. Gil Hodges and Billy O'Dell. Meaning that they were expected to be winners — or fair' facsimiles of same—and aren’t. “No question.” says Kaline! “This is the worst slump of my career. I’ve studied movies and everything. Ugh.” That's what Detroit fans are saying, too. Kaline was the American League batting champion in 1955 and was second last season with a .327 mark. So you can understand his impassioned frustration when you look at an averi age which limps along around j. 230. . Case Against Mantle j You can make a cri.se against I Mantle, too, if simply on potential. This young man hit .353 and then .365 over a two year span and in one of those seasons knocked a total of 52 home runs. Last year he tailed down to .285 and it was to be assumed that he'd bounce right back. But he hasn’t, being 10 points or so under last year’s es-

fort — and that last seems to be the wrong word. For a fellow who is getting in the exclusive neighborhood of $72,000 to. bash a baseball it is a nickle and dime payoff. Score, too, might have been expected to make a comeback of sorts this season. Hailed as one of the potential greats after a 20game season in 1956. he was terribly injured by a line drive off, Gil McDougald’s bat. He showed promising signs of returning with a 9-11 campaign last year but his 3-7 mark this time out is far from impressive. Antonelli Slips Antonelli, a two-time 20-game winner, copped 19 victories last season and was one of the reasons fori the surge of Giant enthusiasm as they went into this season’ flag chase. His 4-7 mark without any excuse has had a killing effect. So, too. has the failure of Billy O'Dell. The “Digger” was touted as a possible big winner for the Giants and his 7-8 mark leaves more than much to be desired. He has, however, made a “com back” of sorts, winning his last two starts. Much of their troubles might possibly be attributed to the paternal attitude of the Giant front office. 4 Horace Stoneham and his Rover Boys have run the club like just what it is —a rich man's toy. In On Pass It was obvious right fft,m the start of the season that Bill Rigney was in on a pass as the team’s manager. As is usually the case, when things went fmm fair to bad hi; head was lopped off. Then they went to worse as benign Tom Sheehan was installed as the next managdr. Sheehan is a nice, friendly, fatherly gent. He was a pal of Stoneham’s. He didn't want to hurt anybody, it being suspected that he wouldn’t slap 'a fly if it was on the only lump of sugar left in the larder. The Giants needed a tartar. All they got was a lot of tartar sauce. So they kept going and going until they were gone. The shame of it is that a nice fellow like Kaline has to be in toe same kind of a boat.
