anything but polite to hang up the telephone receiver without a courteous “good-by.” Q. I thanked each guest personally for gifts received at a surprise; birthday party in nay honor. Am I supposed also to write a “thank you” note to each of these persons? A. This is not necessary. Q. My son is to be married at seven thirty n the evening. What should he and the other men in
the wedding party wear—tails or tuxedos? - A. Either is correct. The important thing, of course, is that all the men dress alike. Q. When one receives an invitation to a cocktail party written on an informal card, and no reply has been requested, should one reply anyway? sy A. Unless “R.s.v.p.” is inscribed on the invtation, you need not reply. Q. When giving an informal dinner in her home, how does the hostess let her guests know the seating arrangement she wishes? A. The hostess stands at her place at the table, and tells each guest just where he or she should be seated. Q. When setting the dinner table, is there any limit to the number of knives and forks that are placed at each plate? A. There should be no more than three forks and two knives at any one plate. If more silver is needed, it is brought in with the proper course. The dessert spoon or fork is brought to the table on the dessert plate. \ Q. Just what is considered the proper length of time between the announcement of an engagement and the wedding itself? A. There is no “proper” length of time, this depending naturally upon circumstances. Usually, however, the maximum is about six months, and if a couple anticipates a greater length of time, the announcement can be postponed until the date of the wedding is fairly certain.
