About Tax Loopholes For the past 20 years the DuPont family of Delaware has been one of the top contributors to the Republican party. In 1956, their $248,423 GOP gift equalled nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Recently, their campaign contributions were generously repaid from the U. S. treasury, of course. The finance committee of the U. S. senate, by an 11-6 secret vote, 0 K’d the “DuPont amendment. Ironically, it amends a bill that brings the people of the Virgin Islands under the income tax. The amendment, however, permits the DuPont family, while selling 63 million shares of General Motors stock, bought at $2.10 a share, and currently selling at $43 or higher, to pay a tax of only 16 cental share instead of sl2 a share. This means that on their capital gains of $21,700,000,000, they will pay about $43,000,000 in taxes, instead of $650,000,000. We can only wonder how large a contribution the wealthy DuPont family will make this year in return for the gift from the treasury department. Most of us would be Only too glad, wouldn’t we, to pay the full 25% tax on capital gains of $21.7 billion! But then, the half-billion dollar gift will let them give to two campaigns, perhaps, for their favorite sons. i . „ ' It’s Certainly strange how the Republican secretary ■ of the treasury can talk about saving tax money, while his Congressional lobbyist is privately talking just the opposite with the lawmakers. .'
