Assessment Adams county, especially Decatur and Berne, can be quite proud of the assessment job recently completed by the township, city and county assessors, and by the board of appeals. While many of the other counties in the area have decreased greatly in assessed valuation, Adams county managed to increase its valuation. Two large factors worked against this. First, the assessment percent of real value on personal property was lowered to 40% this year, and will be lowered to 33 1/3% next year, the same as real estate. > Second, in the townships there has been a general decrease in personal property. This is because farmers, having second jobs in the city nowadays, - are getting rid of their small dairy herd*- In several townships this has led to an astonishing drop in the total number of dairy animals assessed. Jay county’s assessed valuation dropped so much that it affected the salaries of county officials there, dropping them from a seventh class to an eighth class county for pay purposes. Adams county is a seventhclass county. Most county officers will be cut SSOO a year, the judge dropping S4OO, and the surveyor and prosecuting attorney dropping S2OO each; the county council members will get $l2O instead of $l4O. Jay dropped to $39,356,725, down, just $20,800 for the year. Whitley county, with Columbia City as the county seat, report a drop of $859,410 from last year, to s4l - 312,250. The higher the assessed valuation, the lower the tax needs be to raise the same amount of money; the lower the assessed valuation, the higher the tax rate must be. Some comparisons of near-by cities show the following: 1960 1959 CKy Assessed Valuation Assessed Valuation Decatur $12,211,540 $11,865,600 Columbia City 6,637,520 6,610,150 Winchester — (not given, except as $1,073,520, the valuation). p «rtU«i 8,235,475 $7,979,800 In Winchester the trouble was caused by a new W state law that affected the assessment of Anchor Hocking Glass, reducing it from $2,426,970 to $945,740, raising the Winchester tax rate an estimated 50 cents. County auditor Edward F. Jaberg went to India- . napolis late last week to check over several of the Adams |L county figures, which are subject to administrative corrections^

O"". -— o Lauds Contestant Dear Sir: I thought that you and the citizens of Decatur would be happy to know that the contestant hailing from there and competing in the fourteenth Annual All-Woman Transcontinental Air Race, is a most excellent representative. This girl. I’m sure, must be a staff member of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce as she does nothing but expound the many apparent features of your community. The oply complaint I might offer is that she makes it quite difficult for our Chamber officials to ptopcrly “Sell” this All-Ameri-can City of Torrance, California. The girl who is a contestant in this year’s “Powder Puff Derby” from Decatur is Mrs. Josephine Richardson. Once again, my congratulations on possessing such a charming and talented young lady and hoping that she might some day return to this community that has adopted her, I am Sincerely yours, Dick Fitzgerald Manager, Torrance, Calif., Chamber of Commerce.
Hot, Humid Weather Continues In State United Press International Hot, humid weather in Indiana’s first prolonged warm spell of the season kept a firm grip on Hoosiers today. At least slight relief was expected Tuesday night or Wednesday. The mercury hit 91 at Cincinnati, 90 at Lafayette and Evansville, 88 at Indianapolis, South Bend and Louisville and 86 at Fort Wayne Sunday, equal to or within 1 or 2 degrees of the top readings Saturday. Forecasts called for more warm and humid weather today, tonight and Tuesday, turning cooler by Tuesday night in the northern third and west central portion and “slightly cooler” all around the state Wednesday. The five-day outlook indicated temperatures will average near normal highs of 83 to 91 and normal lows of 60 to 71. After the cooler trend in midweek, it will warm up again by Saturday, the outlook said. Indianapolis recorded .66 of an inch of rain Sunday, but some areas of the city got little or none. Little or no precipitation was recorded elsewhere around Indiana. Precipitiation will average onehalf to one inch during the week, including scattered showers and thundershowers tonight or Tuesday and in the south Wednesday and possibly Thursday. Warm night-time temperatures helped make the warm weather more unbearable. Lows Saturday night ranged from 66 to 71 and Sunday night from 63 at Fort Wayne to 70 at Evansville.

Chicago A Canyon Os Carnival Sound
CHICAGO (UPD—The Republicans finally got a star for their political show today in Vice President Richard M. Nixon and their convention began to look like a convention instead of a football pep rally. With Nixon entering the convention scene at miday, his supporters turned out in a variety of costumes and sound trucks extolling the vice president. They turned tiny Balbo Street between the two big convention hotels, the Blackstone and the Hilton, into a canyon of carnival sound. The supporters of Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller, who had the Chicago field pretty much to themselves until the weekend, were swamped in an avalanche of Nixon girls, pro-Nixon Lithuanian dancers in native costume, a Nix-, on choir and a corps of 50 student models in demure black dresses and girlish white straw skimmers with trailing ribbons, i Nixon supporters from Evanston, 111., erected a seven-foot replica of a shining copper penny on a revolving turntable in the lower lobby of the Hilton. Abraham Lincoln’s profile was on one side of the coin and, you guessed it, Nixon on the other. A bystander observed, “They’re smart to put a Midwesterner on the ticket with Dick this year.” Despite the requests of Republican leaders for a convention with more, decorum than the Democrats displayed in their recent Los Angeles fiesta, the GOP delegates swarmed the lake front along Michigan Avenue and through* the hotel lobbies in colorful costume. Some of the men were wearing red, white and blue pullover vests covered with tiny elephants. A real elephant, an 8-year-old pachyderm named Koa, visited in the lobby of the Blackstone Sunday during the height of “Young Republican Day. - ’ The trainer, a Junoesque platinum blonde in silvery tights, screamed at the Republican ladies to keep their flowered hats and baskets of Nixon buttons clear of Koa’s friendly trunk. There were marching bagpipers and Dixieland jazz combos maneuvering around the hotels. The lower lobby of the Hilton was

Jammed with display booths of manufacturers of buttons, badges, dyed feathers and junk jewelry for volume sale of state campaign organizations.
