Umpires—Lord, Daniels, Jimmy Piersail Is Fined By Indians CLEVELAND, Ohio (UPD—The question of whether to coddle Jimmy Piersail or punish him was settled today when Manager Joe Gordon fined the Cleveland outfielder a day’s pay for his actions in the bullpen during Sunday's doubleheader. Gordon levied the fine against Piersail because he had tossed a baseball into three gloves he had laid out on the ground for the amusement of right field patrons, i In addition, the Tribe manager set up an automatic SSOO fine for each time Piersall is thrown out , of the game by an umpire for the remainder of the season. Gordon’s action came shortly after General Manager Frank Lane had said Piersail “needs sympathetic handling.” “I think Jim needs sympathetic handling,” Frank Lane, Cleveland Indians general manager, told the Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity annual baseball luncheon Monday. ”1 just hope Joe Gordon has enough patience — or an iron fist when necessary—to get the most out of Piersall.” Over 2,600 Lust- Democrats are sold and de’vcred in Decatur each day.

Yankees Drop Indians Down To 3rd Place By MILTON RICHMAN United Press International Casey Stengel fears no one—and neither would you with a pair of musclemen like Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris around. Stengel's strategy is simple but effective, hm ' /nerely stations Mantle and Maris in front of the door and tells them to give the bum’s rush to* Anyone who tries invading the Yankees’ first-place privacy. The Cleveland Indians, trailing only by 1% games, had exactly such a notion Monday night. But when Mantle and Maris got through with them, the Indians were dumped to third place and the Yankees increased their American League lead to two games with a 9-2 victory. Mantle.did his handiwork with a three-run homer, his 22nd of the season, to climax a five-run rally off Dick Stogman in the fourth inning. Maris applied the clincher with his 29th homer at the expense of reliever Barry Latman in the ninth. Ford Wins Sixth Mantle and Maris made it easy for southpaw Whitey. Ford, who gave up eight hits in posting his sixth victory. Johnny Romano accounted for both Cleveland runs with a homer in the second inning and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The loss of the game was of secondary impartapqe to the In- ' dians. The/loss Woodie Held hurt much more. Held suffered a tfroweA finger during the first innfng and is expected to be out of notion from three to five weeks. Only two other games were played in the AL while all the teatps in the National took a breather and 1 enjoyed an open day. The White Sox moved into second place ahead of the Indians with a 9-1 victory over the Red Sox, and the Athletics snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Orioles, 5-1. Score Beats Boston Hard luck Herb Score turned in his finest pitching effort of the season with a five-hitter against the Red Sox. The White Sox scored eight of thMr nine runs off loser Billy Muffett. They got to him for three runs in the third on a pair of walks, Minnie Minoso's double, Al Smith’s single and a sacrifice Uy, then picked up four more in the sixth. Roy Sievers of the White Sox ran his hitting streak to 21 games, longest in the AL so far this sea-

Baltimore scored its only run in the seventh when Brooks Robinson came home on a double play. Liston Winner By Knockout Monday DENVER (UPD—Sonny Liston, the steeljfisted Philadelphia Negro whose knockout of Zora FoLley Monday night made him the most logical contender .for the heavyweight crown, challenged Ingemar Johansson today for the right to battle champion Floyd Patterson. Liston, who had rocketed to the spot as ranking contender for the crown with eight Successive knockouts of relatively obscure opponents, removed any doubts about the power in his 14-inch fists Monday night. He floored the quick-fisted Folley, one of the division’s best boxers, for the 10count with 28 seconds gone,in the third round. The 215%-pound Liston put Folley, who weighed 19814, down twice on nine counts in the second round. Only the bell saved the Chandler, Ariz. veteran for the third round finish of the scheduled 12-rounder. Liston’s manager. Pep Barone, said his slugger was eager to fight Johansson, the ex-champion from Sweden, for the opportunity to face Patterson in a championship bout. But Patterson and Johansson are slated for a rematch, and Liston may have to wait. “We’ll take Johansson next," Barone said. “If we can’t beat Johansson, then Johansson would have the right to fight Patterson again.” Liston has a grudge against the good-looking Swede, who wouldn’t permit the Philadelphian into the ring for an introduction during the last Patterson-Johansson fight in New York.
